MASS AGE TOOL. APPLICATION FlLED FEB, 25 I920.
Ptented Mar. 8, 1921.
m w 6 In NOflRlS PETERS. lNc.. Lnuou Wnsnmcron D C v UNITED STATES HENRY MALM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MASSAGE-TOOL.
Application filed February 25, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MALM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Massage- Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for treatment of the skin and flesh, and it pertains more particularly to devices of this character operating upon the vacuumprinclple.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide a new and improved device for creating a vacuum in the presence of the skin or flesh of the human body in order to promote a healthy and vigorous condition thereof.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this character which is readily portable.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a device of this character in which the several parts subjected to wear may be readily renewed at will.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail view in side elevation of a portion thereof;
Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of a portion of the piston employed;
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the nozzle of the device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a cylindrical member 1, preferably formed of glass. Each of the ends of the cylindrical member 1 is open, and adapted for reciprocating movement within the member 1 is a piston 4. This piston 4 is provided on one of its ends with an operating handle 6 separated from the main body portion of the piston by means of a continuous annular flange 5.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Serial No. 361,145.
This piston 4 is formed from the same material as that from which the cylindrical member 1 is formed, and said piston 4 is preferably formed hollow for the purpose of lightening the same.
The forward end of the piston 4 is reduced as at 7, and its forward extremity is reduced and screw-threaded as at 15. Passed around the reduced portion 7 of the piston 4, is a washer of leather, rubber, or other suitable material, and engaging the reduced extremity 15 of the piston is a nut 9, by means of which the washer 8 is maintained in position on the reduced portion 7.
Secured to the open end of the cylinder 1, as by means of a band 3, is a rubber nozzle, and said nozzle has its forward portions inclined to provide a reduced opening 2.
In Fig. 2 is shown a slightly modified form of the invention in which the nozzle 2 is carried by an angularly disposed reduced extension 16 formed integral with the forward end of the cylinder 1.
The device operates in the following manner:
The contracted opening 2 of the nozzle 2 is placed in contact with that portion of the skin which is to be treated and upon a reciprocating action of the piston 4, a suction within the cylinder 1 is produced, thus massaging the skin or flesh at the point of the contracted opening 2.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A massage implement comprising a glass cylinder having one of its ends reduced and angularly disposed with respect to the body portion of the cylinder, a flexible nozzle secured to said angularly disposed end, a glass piston adapted for reciprocating movement within the cylinder, said piston having one of its ends reduced, and means removably secured to the reduced end of said piston and adapted for engagement with the interior of the cylinder to produce a vacuum upon movement of the piston relative to the cylinder in one direction.
