This invention relates to improvements in massage devices. V I I v I I The primary obj ectof the invention resides in a'massage device which may be strapped Y to the wrist and grasped by the hand of an operator to manually actuate the device and 1 guide the same over the surface to'bemas- I saged, and bytheuse'of whichthe surface maybe effectively massaged if .7
Another object'of'the invention is to pro.-
' videa massage device embodying a cylindris cal rotary massage element having vacuum cups on the exterior thereof which are compressed as the cups engage the surface to be massaged, to create a suction action upon the 1 skin by which thetissues are exercised or stimulatedand the circulation of the blood flow of the human body induced. V
7 I A further object isthe provision of a massage device embodying a rotatable rubber cylinder having vacuum cups arranged circumferentially therearound on the exterior, and
' inwardly extending heads behind the vacuum cups which are 'eng'agedby a roller for com-- pressing the "heads to distort the vacuum cups to expel theair therefrom as it rolls over the surface to be massaged, whereupon' a vacuum is produced as the cups return to 1 their natural positions to draw upon the skin of the part massaged. 1 A further object is sage device which may be grasped by the hand of a userand operat'ed upon his own body or V that'of'another without-tiring results. I j With these and other objects in view, the
' invention resides'in certain novel. construc- I tion and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features 0f which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly 4o pointed out in the appendedclaims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which I I Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved massage device strapped to the wristv ofauser.' I
the'prolision f mas": ing movement to the heads and for prevent Figure =3isavertical transverse sectional. view on the line 3-8, of Figure 2. i 5 I vided with spaced openings 13 arranged in Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, i
Referring to'xthe drawingsby reference characters, the numeral 10 designates my im-s proved massage device ins-its entirety which includes a cylindrical casing or shell 11 having end walls12 while the-side wall is proannular rows therearoun'd. Surrounding the cylinder is a yieldable elastic sleeve 14 which v is cemented to thecylinder for turning there with, while the outer surface of the rubber sleeve is 1 provided with annular arranged rows of vacuum cups or recesses 15. Flexible heads or projections 16 extend inwardly be- I hind the respective vacuum cups'and pass throughthe openings 13 in the cylinder to extend within I the same. Annular metal 5 bands 17 encircle thesleevebetween the rows 7 of vacuum cups to aid in preventing acci- I dental separation of the rubber sleeve from the cylinder. The metal bands liebelow the plane of the outer edgesofthe vacuum cups [during useof the device.
so as not to touch, the skin tobe-inassaged Vulcanized or cemented to the heads 16 is a continuousfabric strip 18 which is slack betweenthe heads to'allow a'limited spreadmg the pressing roller 19 from becoming stuck between two adj acent rows of heads.
'Journalled' in-the end walls 12 axially thereof is a shaft 20 havinglinks, 21 fixedly mounted thereon adjacent the inner sides of the end walls and which links serve as depending bearings for "a shaft 22 on which the roller 19 isturnably mounted and which rides over the yieldableheads protected by the fabric covering-for successively collapsing the vacuum cups 15.3 :As the roller: successively moves into engagementiwith the heads, the
fabric covering-c becomesutaut as shown in j Fixed to the exteriorly projecting ends of the shaft are the angular parallel legs 28 the cylinder, so that as the'device is rolled.
of a yoke 24, the yoke portion being twisted at right angle to lie flat against the wrist of the arm of auser. A cushion pad 24 is provided on the top of the yoke for preventing the Wrist from resting directly on the metal yoke. The yoke carries a buckle strap 25 by which the device may be strapped to the wrist, while a handgrip 26 is supported suitably spaced from the strap to, comfortably receive the hand' as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. 7 p
In use, the device is applied to the wrist of a user in the manner just described and the hand grip 26 is grasped. -The natural-Inassage position is shown in Figure 3 of the dr'awing, wherein theaxis of'the roller 19 is to one side of the vertical axisof the axis of over the fleshto be massaged,'the-r0ller acts upon the heads just prior to engagement of the vacuum cups with the surface to be massaged to flatten the vacuum. cups and expel,
the air'therefrom. As the vacuum cups en- 7 i gage the flesh and the roller releases the heads,
.- less thanthe whole ofmy invention limited pell-ing air from said va'cuu mcup'saas the de the resilient nature of the same returns them to normal position and when returning to normal position, thesame-suck upon the'flesh by reason of the vacuum produced thereby.
This suction tends to'stimulate the tissues of the skin or flesh to'induceblood circulation and maintain the user in a healthy condition. By lining the interior with a. fabric covering, the roller is prevented from direct contact with the heads, which: prevents wearing and breaking of thesame.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of-my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of'my invention," andl therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything only by the appended claims. What isclaimed as new is 1.
