JEAMBAPTISTE PINOHARD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUNDS AND APPARATUS FOR THE CURE 0F ASTHMA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,093, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAMBAPIISTE PINCH- ARD, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a certain Uhemical Compound and Apparatus for the (lure of Asthma, the said compound being ad ministered by means of a simple mechanical contrivance herein fully described.
The compound consists of the following materials: Alum powder, sixty grains; gum
acacia, twenty seven grains; and camphor, three grains 5 to this is sometimes added, according to the case to be treated, six cubic feet of oxygen gas, with which the mixture is thoroughly saturated. This I introduce into the apparatus represented in the drawing and here with submitted, consisting of an oval-shaped vessel, A A A, with stand S, cover 0, and mouth-piece M. Into this vessel a cylindrical brush, B, is placed, extending its entire length, and filling it with the exception of a small space at the top. The brush B is made to revolve by the handle H on the axes, formed in the cover 0 and end of the vessel A A A. At the bottom of the lid 0 a small valve, 1), working on a spring, is fitted to cover the hole h, so as to admit of the passage of air into the vessel when withdrawn by suction from the mouth-piece M.
When a patient is to be treated for asthma, the chemical elements or compounds are placed on this brush B and introduced within the vessel A A A, andthe joint the cover 0 makes with this vessel is hermetically sealed by being pasted all round with a slip of paper; the mouth is then applied at M, and the handle H turned briskly while suction is induced to the required capacity of the individual, the apparat-us serving as a vehicle for the proper inspiration of the gas and material that act directly on the lungs.
I claim as my invention- 1. The compound formed of the following materials in their respective relative proportions: Alum sixty grains, gum acacia twenty-seven grains, and camphor three grains, the whole mixed with or Without the saturation of six cubic feet of oxygen gas, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The oval-shaped apparatus A A A, provided with a cover, 0, interior brush B actuated by the handle H, mouth-piece M, and valve 12, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
JEAMBAPTISTE PINOHARD.
