PETER PETERSON, OF GREENVILLE, MICHIGAN.
FRUIT-JAR HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application filed April 14, 1920. Serial No. 373,886.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, PETER PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville. in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan. have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fruit-Jar Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fruit jar holders and consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
in object of the invention is to provide a jar holder of simple and durable structure adapted to be applied to a table top or other support with means for clamping the same in position thereon. The holder is also provided with means for securely retaining the jar in position against movement while the cap thereof is being unscrewed.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a structure of the character stated for adjusting the jar clamping elements whereby jars of difierent sizes maybe retained when the device is in use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a fruit jar holder of simple and durable form and having jaw members pivliandle portion, the said jaw members having abutting cooperating edges which are adapted to each other when the wrench is applied to a jar and the handle is swung whereby the jar engaging ends of the jaw members are caused to grip the jar thus facilitating the unscrewing of the cap from the jar.
in the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the jar holder indicating a jar in position therein.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same out on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a block which may be used with the holder.
The jar holder comprises a member having a base portion 1 provided at its lower side with lugs 2. which serve as legs when the member is applied to a table top as will be explained. The base portion 1 is in the form of a ring or annulus and may receive the lower portion of the fruit jar when the device is in use. Standard portions 3 are located. at the opposite side part of the base portion 1 and one of the standard portions is provided at its lower end with an extension a which is disposed below the lower side of the base portion 1 and which carries at its lower end a clamping screw 5 adapted to engage against the lower surface of the top of a table when the device is in position thereon whereby the holder is secured with relation to the support.
The standard portions 3 carry at their upper end a semi-circular clamp portion 6 which is provided at one end with a handle 7. The portion 6 is provided at its top side and at a point between its ends with a transversely disposed groove 8 which slidably re-, ceives the shank 9 of a clamp member 10. The member 10 is arcuate in plan and is provided at its inner edge with a soft packing 11 of rubber or other suitable material and which is adapted to bear against the side of the jar when the same is in position in the holder. The portion 6 is provided at a point between its ends and between the side edges of the groove 8 with a transversely disposed slot 12 which receives a bolt 13 carried by the shank 9. A wing nut 14 is screwed upon the lower end of the bolt 13 and is adapted to hear at its upper face against the lower side or surface of the clamp portion 6. It will be apparent that by loosening the nut 14 upon the bolts 13 the clamp member 10 may be shifted or moved with relation to the clamp portion 6 whereby the said clamp member 10 may be brought into engagement with the side of the jaw irrespective of the diameter thereof.
A clamping lever 15 is pivoted at one end to that end of the clamp portion 6 opposite the end thereof at which the handle 7 is mounted. The lever 15 is provided with an arcuate portion 16 lined at its inner side with a packing 17 similar to the packing 11 hereinbefore described and when a jar is secured in the holder the free end portion of the lever 15 extends along the handle 7 and both of these parts may be grasped by the operator whereby the jar is securely held in position in the holder. When a relatively short jar is retained in the holder the platform or block 18 may be placed upon the base portion 1 and consequently the short jar will be supported so that its shoulders may be received between the clamp portions 6 and the lever 15. When a jar is retained in position in the holder as indicated a wrench (not shown) may be applied to the jar cap and by holding the jar against turning movement and by swinging the wrench the cap will be loosened upon the mouth portion of the jar and may be readily unscrewed therefrom. It is obvious that when it is desired to tighten the cap upon the jar the movement hereinbefore indicated is reversed.
From the foregoingdescription taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a jar holder of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same will effectually hold a jar against turning movement during the operation of removing the cap therefrom or placing the cap thereon.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 2-- A jar holder comprising a base portion with two standard portions mounted at the opposite sides thereof, means for securing the base portion upon a support, an arcuate clamp portion carried at theupper ends of the standard portions and provided at one end with a handle portion, said clamp portion having ata point between the ends a transversely disposed groove and provided with a slot located between the side edges of the groove, a clamp member having shank which is received within'the groove, a bolt passing through the shank and said slot, means for adjustably securing the bolt into the clamp member, said clamp member being provided with an arcuate section, a packing mounted upon the arcuate section, a lever pivoted to the first said clamp portion and having an arcuate section, a packing mounted upon the arcuate section of the lever, the free end portion of the lever adapted to extend along said handle portion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
