Description

UNITED STATES wILLIA: MANDEBFELD, or canm, tmmsom.
munue rosr.
specification of Letters Patent.
PATENT .OFFICE. j
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
Application filed July 1, 1920. Serial No. 893308.
To-aZl whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MANDER- i FELD a citizen of the United States, residing at omfrey, in the county of Brown and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expanding Posts; and I dohereby declare the'folv for posts, stakes or the like or for any other member inserted in the ground or into wood, such as railroad spikes.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved anchor which is positive in its anchoring and easily constructed is entirely removed from the surface of the member being anchored and is of simple and cheap Construction.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the Construction, the combinationthe detail and arrangement of parts as herenafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stake provided with my improved devce.
lig. 2 is a section medial through Fig. 1, an
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, with the* anchor extended into anchoring position.
In the embodiment of my invention, 'I provide a longitudinal channel 2 in. a stake or other member to be anchored, 3. The longitudinal channel 2 branches to form a Y, the branches being designated by the numerals 4 and 4', and I provide to be inserted in the said longitudinal channel a single wiremember 5, which is bent at 6 to form a pair of closely setting sides which are held at their ends yieldingly outward as at 7, so as to normally straddle the point 8 of the Y and which are passed through a perforation 9 of a slot headed member- 10. I also provide a cylindrical member 1'1, fitting said longitudinalrecess 2 and provided with a tongue 12 to fit in the slot of the said slot headed member`10 and which is provided signature.
with a head 13 for driving the' said anchor 5 downward, whereupon the said anchor spreads upon the point 8 and one end falls in the channel 4- and the other end in the channel 4' into the position shown in F ig. 3. In inserting the said anchor 5 into said longitudinal slot, it is dropped therein and afterward the cylindrical member 11 is inserted until the tongue 12 engages in its slot, whereupon both members are turned by the turning of the head 13 until the points of the member 5 drop-into the Channels 4 and 4:'. Then by the striking of a hammer upon the head 13, the branches of the 'member 5 4 are distorted and driven outward to form an anchor. x
What I claim is:
1. A post having a substantially axial opening, circular in cross section, diverging into openings in the 'opposite sides of the post, adjacent the lower end, an expanding member bent upon itself, presenting juxtaposed substantially parallel arms, and a driving head connected at the bend and presenting a tool-receiving orifice, having a position-determining relation to the juxtaposed extremities. i
2. A post having a substantially 'aXial opening, circular in cross section, extending throughout the major portion of its length and dverging adjacent the lower end by the formation of a wedge shaped intermediate portion, said, openings terminating in the 'opposite sides of the post, an expanding member bent u on' itself, presenting juxtaposed substantally parallel arms, and a driving head connected at the bend and' presenting a tool-receiving orifice having a position-determining relation to the juxtaposed extremities.
3. A post having a substantially axal opening, circular in cross section, diverging` into openings in the opposite sides of the post adjacent the lower ends, an expandng member bent upon itself, presenting juxtaposed substantially parallel arms, -and a driving head proportioned to substantially fill the opening, connected at the bend and presenting at its extremity a tool-re'ceiving orifice having a position-determining relation to the juxtaposed extremities.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my WILLIAM MANDERFELD;
