ALFRED BLUMENTHAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
. OILING DEVICE.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
applicati@ fusa August 1s, 1920. serial No. 404,367.
To ZZ whom t 77mg/ concern.'
Beit known that I, 'ALFRED BLUMENTHAL, a citizen of the `United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and VState of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Oiling Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to fountain brushes ofthe type shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States for a wall cleaning and sizing apparatus, No. 1,255,695, granted to me on February 5, 1918.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved oiling device arranged for thoroughly rubbing oil or similar liquid on wooden fioors, walls,Y interior and exterior woodwork, furniture and the like.
Another object Vis to enable theruser to readily manipulate the oiling device without danger of soiling the hands or clothes.
Another object is to prevent scratching or other injury of the surface treated with oil or similar liquid and to permit of conveniently oiling a large surface with a single charge of oil and without requiring much physical exertion on the part of the operator.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved oiling device;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the applying member;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the core of the applying member;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the improved oiling device on the line 4 4; of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a similar view`of a modified form of the applying member in position on the reservoir containing the oil or similar liquid.
The reservoir 10 is adapted to contain oil or a similar liquid 11 and from the back of the reservoir projects a socket 12 which can be used as a handle to manipulate the device, but, if desired, a stick 13 may be attached to the socket 12 for conveniently using the apparatus on surfaces out of convenient reach of the ,operator. The reservoir 10 is provided with a filling spout la for conveniently filling-the reservoir with oil, and the said spout 111C is normally closed by av cap V15.
The `under side of the reservoir 10 is provided with a depending socket 2O extending the entire length of the reservoirilO, and into this socket 20 is removably fitted an applying member 2l for applying the liquid 11 to a surface, as hereinafter more yfully eziplained. The applying member 21 consists of a core 22 and a covering 23, and the said core is made ofsheetjmetal or other rigid material in the form of an yelongated-rectangular frame provided with a corrugated insert 24 extending from the open' top to the open'bottom of thel core to provide 'a large number of passages or openings for the oil.V The covering. 23 is preferably made" of felt or similar fabric material, and completely l incloses the core 22. The covering 23 fits snugly against vthe inner surfaces of the walls of the socket 2O thus closing the socket with the top of the covering 23, however, eX- tending into the reservoir 10 to allow the oil to saturate and pass through the top of the covering and through the openings in the core 22 to the bottom of the covering 23.
The bottom of the covering 23 is provided with an applying element 25 which may be in the form of a number of overlying flaps of felt (see Figs. 1, 2 and a) or a single strip of thick felt as illustrated `in Fig. 5. ln either case theapplying element 25 is capable of iexing and as it practically forms a continuation of the covering 23 the oil saturates the applying element. The flaps forming the applying element are preferably fastened together by a row of stitches 30, and stitches 31 may be used for fastening the thick strip of felt to the bottom of the covering 23, as shown in Fig. 5. It is understood that in either case the oil passing into the passages of the core 22 seeps through the bottom of the covering 23 and passes into the applying element 25 to be rubbed onto lthe surface to be oiled on the operator drawing the applying element over said surface. The core 22 is provided with stops 35 preferably attached to one side and extending through the corresponding side of the covering 23 to abut against the edge of the corresponding wall of the socket 20 thus limiting the inward movement of the 110 applying member 21 when pushing the same into place in the socket 20.
It is understood that in using the device, the operator draws the applying element 25 over the surface to be oiled and the operator b exertinor ressure on the a aratus causes the applying element 25 to effectively rub.
the oil into the pores of the surface.
It is also understood that the lower' por tion of the applying member 21 projects be? low the bottom of the socket and the ap-l plying element 25 projects from the bottom of the covering 23 to insure free ilexing for- Ward and backward of the applying ele- -ment 25, whenl moving the device forward wise. injuring the adjacent'wall..
Having thus describedmy invention, I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ,z-
1. An oiling device, comprising a handle reservoir adapted to contain a liquid and provided with Van opening extending the en-V tire length ofthe reservoir, and an applying member fitting into the said opening and comprisinga hollow core of rigid material and a fabric covering inclosing the core, the inner-portion of the covering being in conitact and saturated with the liquid inthe comprising a core ofvrigid material and aV fabric covering inclosin the core, the latter having a corrugated insert forming pas sages, the said-'covering having a flexible applying element projecting from the bottom thereof. y
8. In van oiling vdevice oi lthe type described, an applying member comprising an elongated'rectangular frame, forming a core, a corrugated insert `fitting' into Ythe said frame and providing vertical passages for the liquid, and a fabric covering inclosing the said frame and provided at theibottom Withfa flexible applying element. j
