To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, JOHN d'nrsnN and JOHN R. CoNNoLLY, citizens of the United States,l residing at Maricopa, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magneto-Contacts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in magneto contacts and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a magneto embodied in the type of internal combustion engine used in connection with the well known Ford automobile, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the magneto Contact and its coacting springare effectively protected against being broken by brake lining waste and whereby no foreign substance that may be in the oil in use in the motor may interfere with the contact.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved magneto contact whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed a vertical sectional view taken through a magneto contact constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention and in applied position, the coacting portion of the crank case being also shown in section.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings C denotes the upper portion of a crank casing as embodied in the well known type of motor employed in connection with the Ford automobile and which is provided with an opening l. Fitting within the opening 1 is a bushing 2 of non-conductive material which has its outer end provided with the annular flange 3 whereby the same may be suitably anchored or connected to the casing C. The bore of the bushing 2 is threaded and with which is engaged the member 4 of conductive material. The inner end of the member 4 is provided with an axial bore 5, the inner end portion o; of said bore being of reduced diameter providing a shoulder. The outer end of the member 4 is adapted to have connected therewith a conductor (not shown) leading to the magneto terminal of a coil box. Y
Seated within the reduced portion a of the bore of the member a is an end portion of the helical spring 6 of desired length and which has engaged with the outer end thereof, the magnetocontact 7.
Surrounding the magneto contact 7 and the coacting end portion of the spring 6 is a sleeve V8 of non-conductive material and which sleeve is slidably disposed within the enlarged portion B of the bore of the member 4. `Said sleeve 8 is constantly urged outwardly by the helical spring 9 surrounding the first named spring 6 and interposed between the inner end of the sleeve 8 and the shoulder 10 defining the outer end of the ,reduced portion a of the bore of themember 4.
As is believed to be obvious from the foregoing description the sleeve 8 effectively protects the magneto contact 7 and the coacting portion of the spring 6 against being broken by brake lining waste and any for-- eign substance that may be in the oil used in the motor cannot foul the same.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a magneto contact constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be limiting our selves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
