Description

SPARK PLUG Filed Jan. 16, 1935 f@ @M im, wzuf'gnwa/ Patented Dec. 29, 1936 UNITED A STATES SPARK PLUG Ignacio Florencio Echave and Alfredo Gabriel Caldararo, Mar del Plata, Argentina Application January 16, 1935, Serial No. 2,030 In Argentina September 25, 1934 1 Claim.
This invention relates to certain improvements in spark plugs such as used in explosive engines, consisting in the application of a movable electrode playing on the stem or ignition rod forming an integrating part off the assembly constituting the spark plug, which application does away with the troubles commonly met with in connection with spark plugs of the type at present in use, consisting in the frequent necessity of subjecting the spark plugs to careful cleansing in order to extract the particles of carbon settling upon the inner wall of their bodies.
With this end in view, as well as others to be detailed further on, the invention is disclosed, for the purpose of illustration, in the annexed drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a view of the assembly of a common type spark plug, the lower part of its body 2O being cut open in order to show the way of application of the movable electrode.
Figure 2 represents, in perspective view, the electrode, showing the structural shape thereof.
In these views, the same reference numbers 25 indicate the same or corresponding parts.
The assembly which forms the subject-matter of the present invention, comprises the following partsz-one electrode l, of adequate section, provided centrally with a longitudinal bore 2,
30 passing from one end to end, through which bore the stem or ignition rod 3 is inserted. This rod, at the lower part of the spark plug assembly, is of smaller diameter than the one of the bore 2, thereby permitting the free play of 35 the electrode in vertical displacement downwardly, a displacement which is limited between the stop 4 formed at the lower extremity of the rod 3, and the lower end of the insulating cone 5 forming an integrating part of common type 40 spark plugs.
The operation is the followings- As clearly shown in Figure l, between the electrode l and the stem or ignition rod 3 a small gap or space is provided, causing an interruption spark to be 45 formed between both parts, when electrode l is in raised position, before a spark occurs in the main gap between the electrode and lower skirt 6 of the spark plug body, thus permitting of greater power and economy in fuel.
50 At the moment of the explosion occurring, the
(Cl. 12S- 169) electrode I is thrown upwardly which causes the automatic cleansing of any particle of carbon which might have become settled between the electrode I and the internal part of the lower skirt 6.
By the details disclosed herein and in the annexed drawing, the advantages obtained through the distinctive feature of applying in spark plugs the movable electrode, are clearly set forth in their functional order, namely: 10 increase in power of the engine and consequent saving of fuel, also considering the advantages set forth hereinbefore with regard to the automatic cleansing of the spark plug during its operation, obviating the necessity of frequent 15 changes due to damages caused to the spark plugs on account of excessive wear.
It is clearly understood that the improvements serving as a basis to the principle which is the subject-matter of the present invention, may be applied to anyone of the different types of spark plugs up to the present known and in use.
Having thus clearly described the present invention and the manner of carrying same into practice, what is claimed to be the exclusive right and property of the inventors, is:-
In a spark plug, a body provided with a depending skirt constituting an electrode and having a cylindrical bore extending from its lower end, an insulating member secured in said body and extending into said bore from the upper end thereof, a conducting rod electrode extending through said member and downward into said bore concentrically therewith with its lower end remote from the lower end of said insulating member, and a cylindricalelectrode member loosely mounted about said rod in spaced relation thereto and freely movable lengthwise thereof, said electrode member having a central bore therethrough of materially greater diameter than and accommodating said rod, the lower portion of said member defining with the surrounding Wall of said skirt a restricted annular passage of uniform width, said rod having an abutment at itsI lower end limiting downward movement of said electrode member and the length of the latter being materially less than the length of said rod below said insulating member.
