Clippers, of which the following is a specification. I
' This invention relates to hair clippers, and the primary object of the inventlon is to provide a pair of hair clippers having improved means for electrically operating the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pair of electrically operated hair clippers having improved-means for resiliently mounting the clipper mechanism on the motor casing, so that the vibration of the.
motor will not be transmitted to the head of the person having his hair cut.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for mounting the clipper mechanism at an angle to the horizontal axis of the motor and handle, whereby the clipper may be readily moved over the vary-" ing curvature of the head of a person havinghis hair cut.-
A still furtherobject of the invention is the provision of means for readily and quickly adjusting the cutting blades of the clipper, so that the tension thereof can be regulated.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an improved pair of hair clippers, which is duable and efiicient in use, one which is simple and'easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost. I
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanyin drawings, forming a part of this speci cation, and in which drawings:

Referring to the drawings, in detail,
wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the improved electric clippers, whlch include the motor B, the handle C, the clipper mechanismD,
the supporting means E connecting the clipper mechanism and motor casing, and the means F operatively connecting the clipper mechanism with the motor.
The electric motor B is of the ordinary or any desired construction either of the alternating or direct current type asmay be desired, and includes the casing 10 and the shaft 11 of the armature.
The handle C is made of any desired material, preferably of insulating material, such as wood or the like and preferably is larger in diameter at the central portion thereof, as at 12, so that a firm grip may be obtained thereon by the hand of the user. The inner end of the handle C is provided with a large head 13 carrying the attaching plate 14, which is adapted to receive screws or other like fastening elements 15, which are adapted to, extend the motor-casing 10. An electric switch 16 is secured to the handle adjacent the forward end thereof, so as to permit the ready operation thereof by the thumb of theuser, and forms means forward end provided with cutting teeth 20" which are adapted to cooperate with the cutting teeth 18. The reciprocating cutting plate 19 is held in operable position b means of pins 22, which extend throng slots 21- formedin the upper surface of the plate on each side of the vertical axis thereof. The pins are carried by the supporting member E which will .be hereinafter more fully described and the pins extend downwardly through the slots 21 into suitable apertures 23 provided in the stationary cutting plate .for the same. i
The supporting means E lnclude the pair of' parallel U-shaped resilient brackets 24,
which are arranged on each side of the shaft 11 of the motor and extend forwardly therefrom. The inner terminals of the arms are secured to the motor casing by suitable ing mechanism F which will be hereinafter more fully described. The lower terminals of the U-shaped brackets 24 have secured thereto by suitable bolts, screws or other fastening elements 27, the base or attaching plate 28 which extends forwardly of the arms and the same is bent at an angle to the arms to form the clipper carrying member 29 and the same extends at an acute angle to the horizontal axis of the motor B and the handle C. The forward end of the angle plate 29 is bent at right angles as at 30 into engagement with the reciprocating cutter plate 19 and forms a guide for the same. The forward end of the plate 29 also has secured thereto the pins 22 hereinbefore described.
The stationary cutter plate 17 and the movable cutter plate 19 are held together and in engagement with the plate 29 by means of the screw 31 which extends upwardly through suitable apertures 32 formed in the stationary cutter plate 17 and the plate 29. A relatively long nut 33 is threaded on the shank of the screw and is adapted to be brought into engagement with the U-shaped plate 34, the legs ofwhich are adapted to engage the upper surface of the plate 29 at each side of the vertical axis of the same for a purpose which will hereinafter more fully appear. It can be seen by adjusting the set screw 33 that the lower cutter plate 17 is brought into or out of engagement with the cutter plate 19. The lower end of the screw is provided with a head 35 which is countersunk in the lower cutter plate. The teeth 18 and 20 of the cutter plates 17 and 19 may be further adjusted by means of a set screw 36 carried by the plate 29, and the lower end of this set screw is adapted to bear against the upper surface of the cutter bar 17 adjacent the rear end thereof, and it can be seen by adjusting the screw, the cutter bar may be swung on the screw 31 within certain limits. A tying bracket 37 is provided for the set screw 36 so as to prevent the breaking thereof. A suitable lock nut 38 is also threaded on the set screw 36 so as to hold the same in adjusted position.
The plate 28 is provided with a depending bearing 39, which rotatably receives the driven shaft 40. the upper end of which is mounted in a suitable angled bearing bracket 41 having the angled terminal thereof secured to the base plate by suitable screws or other fastening elements 42. The upper end of the driven shaft 40 has keyed thereto a relatively large gear wheel 43 which meshes with the relatively small gear wheel 44 keyed to the outer end of the shaft 11 of the motor armature. The gear wheel 44 is formed relatively thicker than the gear wheel 43 so as to insure a positive driving of the reciprocating blade during the flexing of the brackets 24. The shaft 40 has also keyed or otherwise secured thereto a cam or eccentric 45 which is adapted to operate in the slotted yoke 46 of the operating lever 47, which is mounted for oscillatory movement intermediate its ends on the screw 36, which forms a pivot pin 48 for the same. The operating lever 47 extends forwardly of the arms 44 and curves upwardly to conform to the curvature of the forward end of the plate 29 and has its forward end enlarged and provided with an arcuating slot for the reception of the set screw 31. It will be seen that the U-shaped plate 34 bridges the stem of the lever and permits the same to readily oscillate between the legs thereof. The forward end of the operating lever 47 is provided with a reduced angled tongue 50 which is re ceived in a cut out portion 51 formed in the rear surface of the reciprocating cutter bar 19.
In operation of the improved device the circuit is closed by means of the switch 16 which puts the motor in operation, which through the medium of the gears 43 and 44 rotates the shaft 40 and turns the cam 45 which operates in the slotted yoke 46, thus oscillating the lever 47 on its pivot 48. The oscillation of the lever 47 reciprocates the movable cutting plate 19 over the upper surface of the stationary cutter plate 17 and thus permits the hair to be readily out In practice, I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in,the above description as the preferred embodiment is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of constructions, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
1. A hair cutter including an electric motor. a handle carried by the motor, U-shaped brackets secured to and lying parallel with and below the motor, and cutter blades carried by the lower forward portion of the brackets and lying in advance thereof.
2. A hair clipper comprising a motor, a clipper mechanism, means operatively connecting the motor with the clipper mechanism, and means for resiliently mounting the clipper mechanism on the motor.
3. A hair clipper comprising an electric motor, a stationary cutter blade, a reciprocating cutter blade, means operatively connecting the reciprocating cutter blade with the motor, and means resiliently mounting the blades on the motor.
4. A hair cutter comprising a motor, a stationary cutter blade, a reciprocating cutter blade, means operatively connecting the reciprocating cutter blade with the motor, and U-shaped resilient supporting brackets connecting the blades and the casing of the motor;
5. pair of hair clippers comprising an electrlc motor having an armature shaft, a stationary cutting blade, a reciprocating cutting blade, means connecting the blades with the casing of the motor, a-driven shaft arranged in parallel relation to the armature shaft, means operatively connecting the armature shaft with the driven shaft, an oscillating lever engaging said movable cutter blade, and a cam carried by the driven shaft engaging the oscillating lever.
6. An electric hair clipper comprising a motor having a casing and armature shaft, supports carried by the motor casing, a bed plate secured to said supports and extending forwardly therefrom, stationary and reciprocating cutter blades carried by the forward end of said bedplate, an oscillating lever mounted intermediate its ends on said plate, a reduced tongue formed on the forward end of the lever and engaging'the reciprocating cutter plate, a slotted yoke formed on the opposite end of the lever, a driven shaft arranged in parallel relation to the armature shaft, means operatively connecting the driven shaft with the armatureshaft, and a cam secured to the driven shaft and operating in the slotted yoke for operating said lever.
7. A pair of hair clippers comprisln an electric motor having an armature sha t, a pair of U-shaped resilient brackets secured to and arranged below the motor, a base plate carried by the brackets extending forwardly therefrom, a stationary and a reciprocating cutter blade carried by the base plate, an oscillating lever carried by the base plate and operativel connected to the reciprocating blade, a driven shaft rotatably carried by the baseplate and arranged in parallel relation to the armature shaft, a cam secured to the driven shaft and arranged to engage the oscillating lever, and means operatively connecting the armature shaft with the driven shaft.
8. A pair of hair clippers comprisin an electric motor having an armature sha t, a
pair of U-shaped resilient brackets secured to and arran ed below the motor, a base plate carried y the brackets and extending forwardly therefrom, a stationary and a reciprocating blade carried by the base plate, an oscillatlng lever carried by the base plate and operatively connected to the reciprocating blade, said lever having a yoke formed on its rear end, a driven shaft rotatably carried by the base plate and arranged'in parallel relation to the armature shaft, a relatively large gear wheel secured to the driven shaft, a relatively small gear Wheel secured to the armature shaft and meshing with the relatively large gear wheel, said relatively small gear wheel being formed relatively thicker than the large gear wheel, whereby during flexing movement of the brackets, the same will be permitted to remain in mesh with the relatively large gear wheel, and a cam secured to the driven shaft and engag-.
arranged below the same on opposite sides of the armature shaft, a forwardly extending base plate secured to the lower ends of the resilient brackets, the forward end of said base plate being bent at an obtuse angle to the main body portion thereof, a right angular foot formed on the forward end of said base plate, a stationary cutter blade, a reciprocating cutter blade, the right angularly extending foot engaging the upper surface of said reciprocating cutter blade, an oscillating lever pivotally mounted upon the upper surface of said base plate, said lever having a right angularly extending portion formed on the forward end thereof for engaging with the reciprocating cutter blade, a screw carried by the stationary cutter blade and extending through the reciprocating cutter blade, a resilient U-shaped bridge carried by the screw and arranged over said oscillating lever, a retaining nut threaded on said screw and arranged to engage said resilient bridge, a driven shaft carried by the base plate and arranged in parter blade.
