WITNESSES: v I. INVENTOR:
um so srarss PATENT o ries.
SAMUEL s. com, or ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
noon. on wmnow FRAME.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL 'S. CoL'r,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door or Window Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appertains' to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to acters of reference marked thereon,'which form a part of this specification; I
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in concrete construction; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel method and means for providing the concrete walls of buildings and other structures made of concrete, or similar material, with openings for windows or doors, without cutting openings in the cribbing or form-boards, employing in connection with the cribbing or form-boards, at
desired points, so as to form parts of the mold or form into which the concrete-mmture, .or the like is poured, various members comprising parts of the window or doorframes.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a simple and novel method, as well as a novel and simplyconstructed mold-form, comprising in combination with cribbing or form-boards, various members or parts of window or door frames, for the purpose of providing walls and other structures of concrete, or similar material, with openings, in which the win dew-frames or door-frames are fixed, when the cribbing or form-boards are removed, the window or door-frames being ready to receive the window-sashes or doors.
The present invention has for its further object to provide a novel construction of frame, and a novel arrangement of the parts thereof, such frameto be disposed between the cribbing or form-boards, and being permanently fixed in the concrete-structure after the cribbing or form-boards are taken down, providing in addition to the framestructure, a novel drip or means which will prevent the water from dripping or flowing into the window or door-opening.
The invention has for its further object to provide a novel construction of frame to be disposed between the cribbing or formchars .Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Feb 22, 1921 Application'filed February 27, 1918. Serial No. 219,364. i
boards, said frame being permanently fixed in the concrete-structure afterthe cribbing or form-boards are taken down, the sai frame being provided with an adjustably disposed sill, normally providing a part of the mold-form, but, after the concrete-structure has been'built and the cribbing or formboards-have been removed, being adapted to be moved or pushed in an outward direction so as to project beyond the vertical face of the finished wall and thereby providing the projecting sill-portion usual in the constructions of buildings, etc. i l 7 Other objects of the present inven'tion not at this time'more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description ofthe present invention. c Withthe various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel mold-form for providing concrete walls, and the like, with window or door receiving openings, and the 7 novel method of producing the same; and, the lnvention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the 7 various devices and parts, as well asin the details of the-construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully. described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification. i
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure '1 is a transverse vertical sectional representation of a mold-form, showing fragmentary portions thereof, that is, oppositely spaced cribbing or form-boards, and. the various members or parts of a framestructure for either a window or door, said frame-structure forming part of the mold, said View also showing in connection therewith, fragmentaryportions of the concretemixture disposed between thesaid cribbing or form-boards and about the said framestructure; and Fig. 2'ris a horizontal sec 'tional representation of the same, sald section being taken 01111118 2--2 in said Fig. 1, looking in the directionof the arrow 00.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing portions ofthe finished .wall-striicture and the various parts of the frame-structure disposed'in the wall, ready to receive a window or .door. Fig. 4 is a view similar to said Fig. 1, of i vide the concrete wall-structure and a window-frame fixed therein, the window-frame being placed so as to provide in front of, the
same what is known in the art as a reveal; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional representation of-the same, said section being taken on line 55 in said Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow y.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of thesaid above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a plurality of oppositely disposed form-boards, cribbing, or mold-sections, which in the drawings are shown as being vertically placed, but which, aswill beevident, may be'arranged in any other suitable manner, the opposite boards or sections being suitably spaced accordingto the thickness of the wall to be produced, and held in their respective positions by means of suitable spacing and retaining means of any desirable construction. 7
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and'2of the drawings, each frame-structure to be disposed between the said mold-sections or form-boards 1, at any desired point, comprises a pairof vertically disposed sidemembers-oruprights '2, to the upper endportions of-which is suitably secured,so as to connect the said upper ends of the said uprights, a horizontally disposed head-jamb 3, and to the lower end-portions of which 18 suitably secured, so as to connect the said lower ends of theuprights, a horizontally disposed main-sill, as 4. Located in front of the said head-jamb 3, and secured thereto by means of nails 5, or other suitable fastening means, is a horizontally disposed casingmember 6, said member e'xtendmg in an upward direction above the upper surface of the said head-jamb, and being provided in 7 its rear face with rearwardly extending screws 7, or other rearwardly projecting means, the purpose of which will be self- -evident from an inspection of F igs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
Suitably mounted upon the upper surface of the said casing-member 6 is a strip, as 8, upon .which'is secured, by meansof the nails 9 whichlalsosecure the strip -8 to the casingmember 6, a plate 10, made of sheet-metal or any other suitable material. The said plate 10'is preferably provided at its rear edge with 'an upwardly extending flangelike'member, as 11, and at its forward edge with a downwardly extending portion, as 12, normally dying against the outer faces of the strip 8 and the casing-member 6, as shown in Fig. 1. I V r Suitably connected with the under surface-portion of the main-sill 4, by means of screws 13, or other means, is a sub-sill-14,
' andin. alinement with the said casing-member 6 are a pair of vertically disposed endmembers 16, suitably secured at their lower ends, by means of nails 15, or other suitable fastening means, to the said sill 4, so that the various parts just described will provide a frame-like structure in which, at the proper time, may bemounted a window-sash or sashes, or may be hung a door, if desired. Back of the sub-sill 14, and suitably secured by means" of nails 17 or other fastening means, to theunder snrfacaportion of the sill 4 which extends beyond the rear surface of said sub-sill, is a block 18 of any suitable length, the purpose of which will presently be more fully described.
Under normal initial conditions, when the frame-structure just described is to be used as apart of the mold, the general arrangement of the various parts is such, that the several oppositely placed cribbing or moldboards 1 have the framestructure snugly fitted between them, with the boards 1 extending across the opposite faces of the said frame-like structure and thus closing the openings in the front and rear of said frame-like structure, as clearly shown in said Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
The mold-form having thus been completed, concrete or other similar mixture, as 19, is poured into the mold, between the boards 1 thereof and about the frame-structure disposed between the said boards.
lVhen the concrete-mixture or similar ma terial has set sufliciently, thus completing a wall, the cribbing or form-boards I 1 are taken down, but the frame-structure for the window-sashes or doors is permitted to remain permanently embedded in the completed wall or other concrete structure pro duced. 7
After the removal of said cribbing or form-boards 1, the nails 17 and screws 13 are removed sufliciently, first to permit of the withdrawal of the block 18 for the insertionin the space thus left and back of the sub-sill 14 of a rod or proper tool for pushing the said sub-sill forwardly into the position indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, so as to project beyondthe outer face of the wall, as shown. This having been accomplished. the screws 13 are once more screwed down,-through the sill 4 into the sub-sill 14, so as to-fiX said sub-sill in its adjusted relation. to the wall, as will be clearly evident. The open spaces provided by the forward movement of the sub-sill 14 and the removal of the block 18 may be plugged up with concrete; or, if desired, the said-block 18 may be reinserted andsecured in place by driving thenails 17 back into position as indicated in Fig. '3. The depending portion 12 of the plate 10 isalso bent upwardly andthen outwardly, to permit of the placing of a drip strip, as 20, against theexposed face of the previously-mentioned. strip 8, the portion 12 of the metal plate '10 then being forced down upon the upper surface and against the outer face of the drip-strip 20, the metal vdrip thus provided and the strip 20 being thereupon secured in their fixed positions by means of nails 21 or other suitable means of fastening.
If desired, a molding, as 22, may then also be secured in position, as shown in said Fig. 2, for ornamental effect.
A window-sash or sashes, or a door, may be then readily mounted in the frame-work, thus permanently located in the wall.
Where a reveal is desired, as indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the strip 8 is omitted, and the various frame-members 2,
3, 4, 6 and 16 are made of such widths, that a space, as 23, between the inner faces of the one set of cribbing or form-boards 1 and the outer faces of the members 6 and 16 will be provided, this space having disposed V therein a space-closing frame, board or boards, as 24:, substantially as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings.
After having poured the concrete-mixture in this form of mold, the cribbing or formboards 1 and the frame, board or boards 24 are removed. The sub sill 14 is moved forward and secured in its adjusted position in the manner hereinbefore described, with the result that a window-frame is secured in its permanent position in the wall, and that the frame is located sufficiently back of the front face of the wall, so as to provide what is known in the architectural art as a reveal.
From the foregoing description of the present invention, it will be seen that I have produced a simple and operative moldconstruction, of which a window or doorframe provides a component part, which frame is left in its position in the finished wall, after the cribbing or frame-boards have been taken down, the cribbing or form being easily and quickly erected, and just as quickly knocked down or dismantled when the wall or structure has been completed.
I am fully aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, -without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appendedthereto. invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
