IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HAiF-IS AND LOUNGES FOR INVALIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,962, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID Gr. BOARDMAN, of Albia, in the county of Monroe and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Chair, Lounge, and Bed forInva-lids; andIdo hereby declare th at the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined chair, lounge, and bed for invalids, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the same as a chair. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, showing it as a bed; and Fig. 3 is a view of a part of the side, showing a slide for holding up a box under the seat.
A represents that part which forms the seat of the chair, supported by legs B B suitably braced. which is hinged, as shown, to one end of the seat, and connected, by pivoted arms a, to a horizontal frame, D, which slides in guides I) attached to the legs B B a suitable distance below the seat A. At the outer end of the frame D are legs B to support the frame in a horizontal position. The under sides of the side'pieces of the frame D are cogged, as shown, and the frame moved out and in at pleasure by means of two cog-wheels, d, on a shaft, 6, and this shaft turned by a crank at one end. At the other or foot end of the chair is a similar horizontal sliding frame, E, with legs, and the side bars of which are cogged on their under sides, and operated in precisely the same manner by means of cogwheels d on a shaft, 6.
When the invalid desires arecumbent position or bed the back C may be lowered to any ,position by extending the rear frame D, thus 0 represents the back of the chair,
forming the head of the lounge or bed as desired.
On one end of the shaft 6 is a cog wheel, f, into which works a pawl, h, to hold the back 0 in any position desired. By extending the front frameE the bed or lounge is completed G represents the foot board or stool, hinged between the front legs of the chair, and adjusted at any height or angle desired by straps m m.
The person occupying the chair can be placed in any desirable position so gradually that they will hardly feel the changes. Invalids who have any strength at all can do it all themselves, thus saving so much trouble and labor of waiting upon them.
In the center of the seat is an aperture, 02,
witha lid, H; and under said aperture is a box, I, hinged at one end, and supported at the other end by a slide, 12. In the box I is another box, J, to contain a chamber-vessel, which interior box and chamber-vessel can be drawn out, when the box I is lowered, by with drawing the slide 19. By this arrangement the patient can very easily attend to himself without assistance.
The legs Band B are all to be provided with casters, so that the bed can readily be moved to any place where desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The toothed frame D, pinion d, connecting-bars a a, and back 0, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The toothed frame E and its pinions or wheels (1, in combination with the seatA and movable or adjustable back, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The box I hinged to the chair-frame beneath the seat, said box being supported or held in position and used as and for the purpose specified.
