UNITED STATES PATENT @FFIL l.
CHAS. LOVE, OF PERU, ILLINOIS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,692, dated October 16, 18155.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Lovn, of Peru, in the count-y of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lashing-Machines; andV I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this speciiication7 in whichd Figure 1 is a Vertical section of machine taken through the axis of spindle and on line af Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan of interior of machine, with rubber removed. Fig. 3 is a plan of lower surface of rubber R. Fig. 4 is a section perpendicular to axis of one of rollers r on line y g/ of Fig. l.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part of the machine.
The class of washing machines to which my invention applies is that in which the machine is composed of a tub and rubber. These machines have as general features ribs of various kinds, both radial and oblique, upon the tub bottom and rubber disk, the operation being performed by the passage of one series of ribs or brushes over the other, with the clothes between them, and compressed between the tub bottom and rubber; each movement of the rubber drawing the clot-hes over the plane bottom of the tub. This action causes to some extent the forcing of the liner particles of dirt into the fabric, while the larger particles tend to cut the garment. This ill result of the tub machines varies with dierent construe tions of ribs and bottom, and although small in some, it nevertheless obtains in all.
To guard against this evil, and otherwise to facilitate the washing operation are the objects of my invention, the nature of which consists in constructing within the tub for the support of the clothes to be operated upon, a rack or grating, composed of radial, fluted cones, each capable of rotation on its axis. This in connection with a brush rubber constitute the washing apparatus, whose construction, operation, and advantages are as follows.
In the drawing A is the cylindrical portion and B the bottom of the tub, from the center of which arises the spindle C as is usual in machines of this character. This spindle and small block a against the portion A of the tub constitute bearings for a series of iiuted cones 1', so placed that their upper elements are horizontal; said series of cones composing a grating for the support of the articles to be operated upon. Resting upon the shoulder o of spindle C is the rubber R, having upon its under surface a series of radial brushes D. The rubber has an alternate partial rotation imparted to it by power applied to the bar F supported by standards G.
The mode of operating this machine is similar to that employed for others of like character. The clothes being placed upon the rack, the tub partially filled with water, and the rubber alternately rotated as above stated as long as necessary. At each partial rotation of the rubber a different portion of the garment is submitted to the action of the brushes by the revolution of each rib of the rack; and this without the dragging which takes place where the ribs are fixed. Moreover at each movement of the rubber, and consequent partial rotation of the cones the flutes so act on the water as to create successive inward currents as shown by arrows in Fig. l, which currents, as they meet, cause an upward swash of water through the clothes from the spindle outward. The eect of this action is, that as each motion of the rubber releases particles of dirt from the garment, an upward flow of water is created which at once removes said particles and prevents their being again ground into the fabric. The dirt thus removed falls to the bottom of the tub and is prevented from again entering the garment by the elevated position of the rack precluding the rubbing of the garment over the bottom of the tub in the various changes of position.
The advantages of this construction need not be enlarged upon it being sufficient to state that the operation is performed in less time and with less injury to the fabric than 10 rotation7 arranged and supported as described, and operating as set forth for fa oilitating the Washing operation.
In testimony whereof7V I have hereunto signed my name` before two subscribing Witnesses.
CHARLES LOVE.
