NEEDLE AND SHUTTLE SELLING-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1921.
Application filed April 27, 1920. Serial N 0. 377,058.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle and Shuttle Selling-Cabinets, ofwhich the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in needle and shuttle selling cabinets, and is for the purpose of providing a cabinet adapted to contain packages of needles of different sizes and for different machines, and also shuttles for the different machines, whereby the salesmen can quickly and accurately obtain the needle or shuttle desired by the purchaser.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a cabinet having a revoluble shaft carrying a plurality of radiating needle package carrying pockets and a plurality of shuttle compartments combined with means for rotating the shaft, and a pointer adapted to stop the shaft at the proper point to position the pocket carrying the desired needleor shuttle, where they can be removed through an opening in the cabinet case.
' Further ObJBCtS of the invention will appear from the following description and disclosure.
In the accompanying drawings:' 7
. Fi ur 1 is a perspective view of a needle and shuttle cabinet embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of the under side of the top of the cabinet, showing the manner of supporting the slidingpointer.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view of the 7 indicating plate.
Fig. 4, is a vertical transverse seetlonal view onthe line (1+4, of Fig. 1. L
' Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fi 6 is a horizontal sectional view on the'lliie 6-6 of Fig. 4.
' Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional view of the sliding pointer. y
, Fig. 8 is' atop plan view of the to of the member carrylng' the needle pac age pockets. showing the spiral arrangement" of the notched stops carried thereby. r
In carrying out myinvention, I provide 'a suitable case which; in'the form here shown, comprises a rectangular bottom portion 1, and a circular or drum portion 2, mounted on the top of the rectangular boxllke portion 1.
' A revoluble shaft 3 has its upper end in a suitable bearing in the top 4, of the circular portion 2, and its lower end 5, stepped in a suitable bearing 6. A beveled gear 7 is secured to the shaft 3, just above the top 8 of therectangular portion 2, and a horizontal operating shaft 9 is journaled in suit- "able bearings 10, and carries a beveled gear 11, which meshes with the gear 7. The outer end of the shaft 9 projects beyond the cabinet case, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and is provided with a suitable knurled wheel 12. By this means the shaft 3 is rotated from the outside of the cabinet in either direction.
A circular member 13 is secured to the shaft 3, at the points 14, and this circular member carries a plurality of radiating pockets 15, which are to receive packages 16, of needles arranged flat-wise therein. The circular portion 2 of the cabinet case is provided with a vertical opening 17, through which the packages of needles may be removed from their pockets. The pockets have outer open ends and are caused to register with the openings 17 so that the desired package of needles may be removed therefrom. V V
For the purpose of causing the pocket containing the desired package of needles to stop at the opening 17, I provide a pointer and stop arrangement, which will automatically stop the member 13, with its needle pockets at the opening 17, as it is being rotated through the wheel 12 and shaft 9, as
before described.
The pointer and stop mechanism includes which have stop notches 20, at their apex, as
shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 4. These notched stop members 19 are arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 8. A pointer member 21 slides back and forth on parallel rods 22, which are secured to the top memher 4 of the circular part 2, as shown in Fig.
'2. This sliding member or head '21 carries a knurled member 23', which is provided with oppositely extending pointers 24. Secured to'the top of the circular portion 2, is an indicator plate 25. This plate'has a 1011- gitudinal slot 26, in
hich the stem 27 i of 110 the pointer member 28 moves. This indicator plate 25 has at one side of the slot notations designating different kinds of sewing machines, and their numbers of needles, and above the needle notations appears the word Needles? On the other side of the slot 26 is designated the names of different sewing machines, and above this designation is the word Shuttles. The sliding head 21, carries a spring detent 2?, which is adapted to engage in the notches of the stop members 1.). This detent 27 has a slot 28, through which a pin 29 passes, the upper end of the detent carrying a plunger head, which is depressed by a suitable spring 31, located between the stem 27 and the plunger, as clearly shown in Fig. 7.
Located within the rectangular box-like portion 2 is a circular shuttle carrying member 32, which is provided with a plurality of radiating shuttle carrying pockets This shuttle pocket carrying member 32 is attached to and supported by the lower end of the shaft through the medium of a suitable flanged collar 34-, so that the member 32 and its shuttle pockets are rotated when the shaft is rotated through the medium of the wheel 12, shaft 9 and gears 7 and 11.
I For the purpose of preventing theneedle packages 16 from being thrown out by the centrifugal action, if the device is rotated rapidly, I provide each pocket 15 with a suitable spring 15, which extends the height of the pocket and serves to cause a slight frictional tension on the packages of needles to prevent them from being thrown out by centrifugal force.
For the purpose of permitting access to the shuttle pockets 33, the edge of the rectangular box-like portion 1 is provided with a door 35, hinged at its lower end as at 36, and this door extends into the top of the rectangular portion 1 and the circularportion 2, as shown at 37, whereby when the door is moved outward by its handle 38, access to the shuttle pockets 33 is permitted through the side and'top of the rectangular portion 1, and the lower edge of the circular portion 2.
In operation when a. certain package of needles is desired for a certain sewing machine, the salesman moves the pointer member 23 until its pointer 24: is opposite the indication on the plate of the needle desired. The wheel 12 is then rotated and the spring detent 27 will engage the proper stop member 19 to cause the proper needle pocket 15 to register with the opening 17 of the circular case 2. In this manner the proper pocket is automatically caused to register with the exit opening 17.
Likewise when it'is desired to have any desired shuttle, the pointer 24 is put opposite themachine for which the shuttle is desired and the detent 27 of the pointer will ally arranged shuttle engage the propel stop member 19 to cause the proper shuttle pocket to register with the door 235. .1 By moving the pointer member 23 to the neutral point of the indicating plate 25, theshaft 3 and its connecting parts can be freely rotated, as may be desired.
fily means of a selling cabinet of this type, the salesman can very quickly turn to the desired package of needles or shuttles, thus saving time as well as making the transaction simple and accurate.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i 1. it selling cabinet of the type described, comprising a case having therein upper and lower rotating compartments, the lower compartment carrying a plurality of radipockets, the upper compartment carrying a plurality of radially arranged needle carrying poclzets, an article retaining spring friction member in the needle carrying pockets, separate exit openings in the case for the upper and lower compartments, anarticle pocket indicator plate and pointer at outside of the case cooperating with a plurality of stop members spirally arranged on top of the upper rotating compartment, whereby the pocket indicated is caused to stop in registered relation to the exit opening in the case, and means for rotating the said pocket carrying compartment.
