Specification of batters Patent. Patented Feb, 15, T5921,
Application filed lune 16, 1920. Serial No. 389,382.
To all who 2'11 it may con cern Be it known that 1, JAMES Gnonon Jaoxsox, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, of Coustonhohn lVorks, Pollokshaws, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Con nected with Extrusion Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention refers to extrusion apparatus for delivering charges of powdered, granular, plastic and like materials or sub stances, hereinafter referred to generally as material, of the type in which the material to be dealt with is delivered in charges each of equal or approximately equal quantity intermittently through a delivery tube by the operation of a helix mounted to rotate axially therein.
The improvements according to this invention comprise imparting automatically to the helix, orto each helix if more than one delivery tube is provided, a cycle of motions successively, as follows :-i'orward rotation, backward rotation, and period of rest. The invention also comprises improvements appertaining to construction and arrangement. p
In the operation of apparatusaccording to this invention, forward rotation of the helix is utilized to produce extrusion, backward rotation to check, extrusion which operates to assist in breaking the connection between the portion of the material constituting the charge to be delivered from the material of the supply, and in the period of rest produced the charge extruded may be removed and provision made for receiving the next charge to be extruded, say, into a formed receptacle.
An example of apparatus, vprovided with four horizontal delivery tubes, embodying improvements according to this invention will now be described With reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view partly in section, Fig. 2 is a side view with the lower'portion omitted partly in section with portions of the mechanism removed, Fig. 3 is a side view on a. reduced scale of the lower portion omitted in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan view partly in section with portions of the mech: anism removed. the section taken being about the line X X of Fig. 1.
The apparatus illustrated comprises a supply chamber A for holding a supply of the material to be dealt with, provided with a hopper head forconvenience in ohargin From the base of the supply chamber 1 four delivery tubes B extend horizontally. Each delivery tube is furnished with a helix B adapted to extend from or near the discharge end of the delivery tube 13 across the base within the chamber A. C designates a. driving shaft arranged with its axis horizontal and at right angles to the axes of the delivery tubes 13. Above the driving shaft a cam diskD is mounted with its axis parallel to the driving shaft C.. The disk D comprises a toot ied wheel D which gears with a pinion C fixed on the driving shaft U by whichit is driven. 7 Upon one face oi the disk D cams E, E E are provided situated about a path concentric-to the axis and near the periphery oi the disk. The cams, see Fig. 2, which extend clockwise E from, 1 to 2, E from 2 to 3, and E from 3" to 1 operate respec tively, as will be hereinafter explained, to bring into action driving gear to produce E, extrusion; E check extrusion; E period of rest. In this case the cam E is composed of two parts of which the part terminating at 2 is fixed to. the disk and the other part which extends from 1 is mounted capable of limited "adjustment circularly about the center ofthedisk D. By this arrangement the distance between 1 and 2 may be altered to regulate the period of extrusion, and adjustment in this manner. would also aii'ect the period of chec t. The cam E from 2 to 3 is not adjustable. F, F designate two toothed bevels mounted to rotate freely upon the driving shaft (7 an ran ed in gear on oaposite sides with a v e i driven wheel G. The gear wheels F, F are provided each with a clutch face adapted to be engaged by the faces of a clutch H located between them. The clutch H is mounted to slide axially upon and is connected to rotate with the driving shaft C and by axial movement be brought into driving connection with either or the two gear wheels F. F or held in an intermediate position out of engagement from both. J designates a rocking arm, mounted about a horizontal pivot 'J the axis of the pivot being at right angles to the axis of the driving shaft C. The arm J is provided at its upper end with a lateral extension J which is maintained in bearing contact with the cams E, E E as the 131011 with the sprmg Ix cause the arm J to disk D rotates, by means of a spring K in tension. The lower end of the arm J engages with the clutch H and is ar 'anged when rocked to move the clutch H axially to and fro. The drive imparted to the driven wheel Gr may be transmitted to each helix by gearing, for instance, as indicated,
consisting of a bevel gear G fixed to rotate 'may be provided having, say, one or more radial arms N mounted upon a shaft D fixed to rotate with the cam disk D, each arm having a blade N extendlng across the supply chamber A and adapted to sweep in a circular path. The end of thesupply chamber A throughwhich the shaft 1) extends may be formed in an integral part with the side walls and the radial arm or arms N may be arranged close thereto, the opposite end may be open and be fitted with adoor A The door A may be mounted to turn about a vertical axis at one side.
In the process of operation a constant drive is imparted to the shaft C in a counterclockwise direction thereby rotating the cam disk D clockwise and the clutch H countcrclockwise. As rotation takes place the cams 'E,'E E on the disk D engage successively with the extension J and acting in conjuncrock about the pivot J ,Thus, when the cam E, portlon 2, 1, is in operation the clutch H is held in driving connection with the gear wheel F, and the drive is applied to the wheel G from whence it is transmitted to the helixes B to produce extrusion. When the cam E portion 1,. 3, is in operation the clutch H is broughtinto driving connection with the gear wheel F whereby extrusion is 'checked, and when the cam E portion 3, 2, is in operation the per 1od of rest is produced,
the parts then assumlng the positions indicated at Fig. 1. A
