EDWARD B. HODES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES A. LAWES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRAW-SHEET GUIDE.
Application filed November 15, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD B. Hones, a subject of the Russian Government, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and having filed my first papers to attain naturalization in the United States, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Draw-Sheet Guides, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices attached to asuitable sheet, and placed in the usual type of platen press to serve as a guide to the several sheets as they are placed therein. Ithas for its object a simple and effective device of the class described adapted to be readily and reliably adjusted from time to time as may be necessary.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and de scribed and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding' parts,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a base sheet showing two of my improved guides in place thereon;
Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 4 to show the preferred means of positioning a cooperating vertical guide therefor;
Fig. 3 is a section taken substantially on line 83 of Fig. 2;
- Fig. 1 is a section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. .2;
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the device partially open ready for positioning in place; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view partially broken away to show a modification.
In the drawings, 1 is a suitable sheet of paper or other material upon which the various sheets are placed as they are presented to the press. As shown, at preferably a plurality of points the sheet is cut or slit as at F 2-2 to provide a section 3 attached at each end of the main sheet 1, forming substantially a tongue, but beneath which the base of my improved guide may be placed. The base 4.- (Fig. 4) is slipped beneath the tongue 3 with its elevated or thickened portions 5 resting upon the top of the sheet 1. A latch piece 6 is pivotally connected to the base Specification of Letters Patent.

piece at one end at 7, preferably having ends reduced as at 8-8 to be positioned within transverse slots formed in the thickened ends The approximate meeting faces on the latch 6 and the base 4 are preferably beveled or otherwise formed, so that as the free end 8 is forced into the slot as indicated at the right-hand of Fig. i, it will serve to cause the latch and the base to firmly grip the part 3 of the sheet 1 therebetween and reliably maintain the guide in proper position to perform its function. The thickened edges 5 as at 99 (Figs. 2 and 6) serve as the guiding pieces for the sheet which is to be submitted to the press.
It will be readily seen as thus described that when it is desired to detach the guides it is only necessary to force the latch 6 together as indicated in Fig. 5, thereby releasing the sheet gripped between the latch and the base, and permitting a slight lifting of the part 3 with the removal of the guide therefrom.
In some cases it is-also important to pro vide an additional guide having the function to hold the paper sheet down and preventing it from riding over the upper edge of the guides 99. This may be accom plished in any preferred manner.
I have secured satisfactory results in the manner indicated in Figs. 2 to 6 inclusive, in which I have formed a transverse slot 10. or the equivalent, through the latch 6 and secured a guiding member 11 thereinwith its end projecting beyond the face 9. I prefer to detachably position the guide 11 in the latch, and one simple means is indicated in the drawings. Referring particularly to Fig. 2, I place a pin 12 or equivalent part near one side of the slot 10 and the latch 6, and form the guide 11 with one or more notches 13 therein adapted to engage with the pin 12. A suitable spring device 14, adapted to engage the other wall of the slot, serves to force the guide 11 toward the opposite wall of the slot with the notch embracing the pin 12. I prefer to extend the end of the spring as at 15 beyond the face of the latch, so that with the thumb and finger the spring may be compressed and the guide removed from the slot. I also prefer that the guide 11 shall be of light metal, although any material that will perform the function may be employed.
The entire device is extremely simple and economical in construction, and very eiiective for the purpose described.
g In the form shown in'Fig. 6, I. have provided simple means to serve to initially move the latch member in relationto the base member to disengage the free end of the latch. As here shown, I form a slot or opening through the thickened end of the base as at 16 and position therein a lever 17 pivotally maintained in place as at 18, with the free end 19 extended and adapted to contact with the free end of the latch. Pressing the end 17 of the lever toward the front of the device will thus serve to force the free end of the latch out, serving to aid in the easy disengagement of the latch from the base. As the parts are rather small this lever arrangement to initially disengage'the parts is some times a considerable convenience.
' Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit oi my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as lim iting'myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination oi parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r 1. In a device of the kind described, abase piece formed to constitute a guidein combination with a latch piece pivotally connected at one end thereto, adapted to swing in a plane parallel to that oi the base to normally lie in close proximity to the base to grip a. sheet of material positioned between the two, means for reliably maintaining the two in such relation, and supplemental means for initially'forcing the free end of the latch member outward to disengage the latch from the base.
2. In a device of the kind described, a base piece forming a guide and having slots formed in the two ends thereof, in combination with a latch piece having its ends reduced to be loosely positioned within the slots, one end of the latch being pivotally connected to the base, the approximate faces of the base and latch being inclined to approach each other as the latch is forced into engaging relation with'the base. 7 V

6;. A device ofthe kind describedcomprising a base adapted to provide a sheetguide, a latch piece connected with said base and capableof a movement relative thereto, said latch piece being normally adapted to lie in a plane parallel with the base and inclose proximity thereto, the latch piece having a transverse slot therein, a supplemental guide mounted in said slot, and means for holding said guide in its different adjusted positions relative to the latch piece.
71A device of the kind described comprising a base adapted to provide a sheet guide, a latch piece connected with. said. base and capable of a movement relative thereto, said latch piece being normally adapted to liein a plane parallel with the base and in close proximity thereto,'the latch piece having a transverse slottherein, a supplemental guide mounted in said slot, and means for holding said guide in its different adjusted positions relative to the latch piece, said means comprising. a pin carried by the latch piece adapted to engage sockets in the side of the supplemental guide, and resilient means for maintaining the i with said pin. 7 V V In testimon'y whereoi, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two su scribing witnesses. 7
