Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.A
DUN GAN D. TEMPLETON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR TREATING LINSEED-OIL.
Specification forming part bf Letters Patent N0.136,SS1, dated March 18, 1873.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUNCAN DTEMPLETON, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Apparatus for Treating Linseed-Oil 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is designed mainly for treatand use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the cylinder, constructed of any proper material and suitable size, and provided with the longitudinal central perforated tube a, as shown. a1 a2 represent cocks, by means of which the air may be exhausted from the cylinder, and the oil introduced when desired. a3 represents a cock regulating rthe admission of substances into the central perfora-ted tube ct. The cylinder A may be supported on wheels, as shown in Fig. l, in such a manner as to be removed therefrom, if desirrd. H represents a filter, by means of which any large substance is prevented from entering the cylinder.
The mannerof usingmyimproved apparatus is as follows: A vacuum is formed in the cylinder in any proper manner; it is then connected ywith the oil-tank, and, the proper cock being opened, the oil is drawn up into it. After being permitted to remain in this condition for six or eight hours, more or less, according to the character of the oil, the cylinder may be exposed to heat, proper bleaching chemicals being injected through the central perforated tube while it is being heated. By means of this apparatus the oil is boiled at a low temperature, and much fuel is saved thereby.
The described apparatus is also adapted for other purposes, such as collecting and treating l f tar, petroleum, and night-soil, in which latter case carbolic acid may be injected through the central tube to prepare the material for fertilizing purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The portable boiler or tank, having the perforated tube, as described, the boiler being adapted to be transferred to a furnace, and revolved, for collecting, treating, and drying linseed-oil, night-soil, Ste., substantially as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 10th day of March, 1873.
DUNCAN D. TEMPLETON.
