Description

APPLICATION FILED APR. 30. I920- Patented Feb. 15. 1921.

ATTORNEY PATENT OFFEOE.
OTTO L. KOCH, JR., 011 WOODLYNN E, NEW JERSEY.
BINDER OR REINFORCING-STRIP FOR BOOKS OR LEAVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
Application filed April 30, 1920. Serial No. 377,833.
To all 10 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO L. K0011, Jr, a citizen of IVoodlynne, residing at W oodlynne, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Binders or Reinforcmg- Strips for Books or Leaves, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to book binding and more particularly to the binding and remforcing of sheets, paper or the like, or the leaves of books, and has for an object to provide a binder that can be cheaply manufactured and readily applied to books or the leaves thereof to bind and reinforce the edges.
The invention comprehends among other features a. strip which is suitably gummed andwhich can be readily applied for instance to the edge of a leaf or leaves of books such as sheet music or the like and which ordinarily become quickly worn and frayed, the binder furthermore reinforcing the sheet of music so that it will not readily bend or collapse when set up.
In the further disclosure of the invent on, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the 7 views, and in which,-
Figure 1- is a fragmentary perspective view showing the application of the binder, to an edge of a sheet of paper.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the binder by itself, and
Fig. 3- is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the binder.
Referring more particularly to the views, the binder consists substantially of a strlp 10 of linen, paper or some other convenient material of a. substantially flexible nature and which is cut out to provide two portions 11 and 12, each gummed on one side as at 13. The end of one of the portions, namely that numbered 11, is formed with an extension flap 14 which extends beyond an end of the portion 12 and this flap is also gummed as at 15. The strip is weakened between the po-rtions 11 and 12, or where they meet, by folding the strip as at 16 so as to provide what might be termed a line or crease and so also with the flap 14, the same is formed with a fold or folding line 17.
In the adaptation of the device to a sheet of paper, the same may be employed to reinforce the edges of the sheet or it may be also used as a reinforcement and binder for the medial fold or portion of a sheet of music.
In the instance shown however, a sheet of paper is indicated by the numeral 18 and the strip described is applied by folding the portion 11 over the back of the sheet and along the edge and the portion 12 over the front of the sheet and along the edge, the portions 11, 12, having been previously moistened so that the gum thereon, will stick to the sheet. The flap 14 is now folded over on to the back of the portion 11 and having been previously moistened, will adhere thereto thus forming a substantially reinforced corner.
It will of course be understood that the binder described may be provided with a flap at each end and although I preferably make the same of some convenient form of linen such as tracing cloth or the like, it can be made of any convenient material.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture a binder comprising a strip of flexible material formed with a central longitudinal fold to provide two longitudinal portions, each of which is gummed on the same side and an extension flap projecting from the end of one of the portions and gummed and formed with a folding line.
2. A binder comprising a strip formed with a medial folding line providing tWO similar strip portions and a flap extended from the end of one of the portions to overlie the back of the other portion and be secured thereto.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
