GILBERT Op HELVIG, OF DAWSON, MINNESOTA.
VALVE-cnr;
mesme.
pplcation led'Aprl 23,1917. Serial No. 163,890.
T 0 all 'whom it may concern:
Be itY known that I, GILBERT O. HnLvie, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dawson, in the county of Lac qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements :in Valve- Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dust caps for the inlet valve tubes of the inner tubes for tires, its object being to provide improved spring means for looking the cap in closing position, thus obviating the necessity of screwing the cap into and out of closing position. To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification- Figure 1 is an isometric view of part of an .auto wheel felly with my improved valve closing cap arranged in connection with a valve tube extending through said felly.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modified j form of the invention showing the cap in outline.V
Fig. 3 is a view of a spring lock shown Fi 1 and forming part of my invention.
Fig. 4 is a detail ofthe dust cap employed in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view ofa modified form of dust cap, and
Figs. 6 Y and 7 are details of a nut and spring used in connection with the modified form of cap.
In the drawings A represents the ordinary valve tube 0f the inner tube 2. lThe valve tube is locked inposition in connection with the wheel felly 3 by the usual interiorly threaded nut 4 intermeshing with the sur# rounding thread 5 of the valve tube whereby to be screwed down upon the felly as shown. A washer may be placed over the vnut 4.
lThe valve tube contains the usual valve (not shown) the outer end 0f the tube being closed by the ordinary cap `7.
In carryingout my invention I employ a dust cap B of the usual type except that as vshown in Figs. 1 and 4, I form the lower free edge of the cap with an outwardly turned shoulder or rib 8, the cap being 6i' the proper size to slide freely over the tube.
For the purpose of holding the cap s hown in Figs. 1 and 4 locked in closing position, I
. provide a spring member 9, the bottom of the spring member being positioned between the nut 4 and the felly. The sides of the spring member extend upwardly toform spring fingers 10 to fit overV the shoulder 8 of the cap. With the cap locked in closing position yas shown in Figs. 1 and 4 an outward pull upon the cap will force the spring ngers apart and allow the cap to be removed.
In placing the cap over the valve tube the shoulder will force the spring ngers apart, the ngers then springing inward over the shoulder to hold the cap in closing position. Y In the modified form shown in Figs. 2, 5 to 7, I show a dust cap formed with an interior circumferential Vrib as shoulder 11. For the purpose l0f engaging with the shoulder 11 and holding the cap locked in closed position, I provide a plate 12 formed with spring fingers 13 to pass upwardly through slots 14 cut through the threads of the nut 15, the upper ends 16 of the spring fingers being outwardly bent to snap over the shoulder 11 of the dust cap and hold the cap locked in covering position. While I- have shown two forms of cap locking spring, I do not restrict myself to theseY particular forms, but may use other modified constructions working upon the same principle without departing from the idea of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a valve stein construction, a piieu matic tire valve tube exteriorly screw threaded, a clamping nut for holding the tube to a wheel felly, a dust cap inclosing the tube and formed on its lower end with a shoulder seating on the nut, and a lock member consisting of a plate perforated to receive theV tube and be clamped beneath the nut, and spring fingers carried by the plate for engaging over Vthe shoulder to hold the dust cap seated on the nut.
i 2. In a valve stem construction, a pneumatic tire valve tubeV externally screw threaded, a clamping nut for holding the tube to a wheel felly, a dust cap inclosing the tube and formed on its lower end with a shoulder seating on the nut, and a lock member consisting of a plate perforated to receive the tube and be clamped beneath the nut, and spring fingers extending upwardly from the edge of the Vplate perforation and within the bore of the nut to engage over the shoulder of the dust cap to hold it seated on the nut, said nut having axially extending slots cut through the threads in its bore to receive the fingers of the plate.
n a dust cup reainer, tbeeembination conned against the rim by the leek nut and,"
including spring arms betweenv which the lock nut is disposed, said arms overhanging the nut and adapted to besprung apart by the cap and to embrace the cap, and inter` locking parts on the dust Cap arms.
In testimony n presence of ytwo Witnesses.
