T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES S. SAPI), Jun., and RAY Sari, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have in- Vented certain new and useful Improvements in Testing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for testing the ignition, compression and combustion in any one cylinder of an internal combustion engine provided with a series of cylinders which may be of any number from four to twelve, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. whereby the functioning of the spark plugs, the action of the valves or pistons causing faulty compression, as well as any fault in the wiring of the ignition system, may be detected and tested by means of this device used in conjunction with the electric circuit pertaining to the engine and without mak ing any cianges in'tlie wiring. The device asdescribed is 'for use on four and sin cylin der motors. An. eight or twelve cylinder motor may be tested by employing two of these devices.
The figure in the drawing shows a perspective view of a testing apparatus constructed according to this invention.
A main support 2, preferably of wood, is provided, and 1t has a bar of wood 3 secured longitudinally under its front part and projecting at each end of it and provided with guide holes 4.
A series of blocks 5 of insulating material is provided, and the blocks are secured to the main support 2 sido by side at short dis- Each block has a bracket 6 secured to it at one end, and a contact piece 7 is secured to it at its other end. A switch lever 8 is pivoted to each bracket 6, and is adapted to be placed in contact with the contact ieee 7 pertaining to it. A wire 9 extends between all the Contact pieces and is connected to ground, being provided, for the purpose of grounding it, with a. spring clip 10 which can be attached to any convenient metallic portion of the frame of the engine to be tested.
A separate wire 12 is connected to each bracket 6, and each wire is provided with a spring cli 14 for connecting it to one of the spark p ugs of the engine to be tested.
The end wires 12 are extended longitudinally of the end portions of the bar 3 and downwardly below it, and. are then curved upwardly and passed through the holes 4 of the bar 3, and the intermediate wires are supported .by a guide piece 'l5 secured to the underside of the bar 3. All thc wires 19., 12 and 9 are suitably insulated, and. the spring clips are of any appro-ved con struction.

Any ,spark plug can be short circuited and cut out by placing the switch lever pertaining to it in engage-ment with its Contact piece. The engine to be tested is allowed to run one cylinder at a time, and any trouble is soon located. The four intermediate wires 12 are used for testing engines having four cylinders, and the end wires are then held out of the way by the bar 3, and are only used when an en 'ne having six cylinders is to be tested. he four intermediate Wires 12 with their clips project parallel to each other at the front of the support 2, and are kept separate and distinct from the wires 12 which are less often required.
What we claim is:
A testing apparatus, comprising a support, a bar secured to the bottom portion of the support at its front part 'and having end portions which project beyond the ends of the su poit and which are provided with vertice guide holes, a series of contact devices secured in a straight row to the top portion of the support, wires'connected to the end Contact devices and projecting longitudinallyof the said bar and thence downwardly and from below it upwardly through t e said guide holes and having means 'for connecting them to spark plugs at their free ends, a plurality of intermediate wires connected to the intermediate contact devices and extending crosswise of and below the said bar and projecting at the front of the support substantially parallel to each other and having means for connccting them to spark lugs at their free ends, means for supporting the intermediate wires from the said bar, and a ground Wire connected to all the said contact devices.
