TOY GUN.

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns;'and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip' tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to toy-guns, and particularly to a gun which will explode paper caps, and the object is to provide a gun which will resemble an army gun in general appearance, making it attractive to the youngsters, and at the same time, in a way, useful, as it can be used by them for drilling purposes.
The invention consists of certain novel features and details of construction as will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
lVe will now describe our invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which, Figure 1, is a side elevation of our invention, Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, showing the parts in their relative positions ready for firing; the dotted lines showing the position of the parts after they have been released and in the position at the time of the firing.
Figs. 3 and 4:, are firing-pin, removed from the gun.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A, represents the gun proper, which as before mentioned is in the form of a regular army gun, being provided with a lock-case B, and barrel 0, into which are secured the several parts comprising our invention.
The barrel C, of the gun is provided with two diaphragms or partitions D, and E, one near the lock-case and the other a suitable distance in from the end of the barrel. These diaphragms or partitions are provided with apertures F, and G, near the detail views of the centers thereof through which an elongated firing-pin H, is inserted and held in position. V
- The'back diaphragm aperture F, is in the ROBERT L. h lON'l which is done in the form of a transverse slot, while the front diaphragm is provided with a round opening, the purpose of which will appear hereinafter. V
The firing-pin H, is made of any suitable material, the forward part of which is round and the back part flattened so as to allow the same to be inserted in the openings in the diaphragms D, and E. The outer end of this pin is provided with a shoulder I, which affords means for exploding a cap, while the back end is formed into a hook J, which is adapted to engage with a trip K, located in the upper part of the lock-case B. r v
Located under and to the rear of this trip K, is a trigger L, the upper end of which is adapted to engage said trip, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Secured on the firing-pin, a short distance behind the forward diaphragm or partition E, is a disk M, forming a butting surface for a spring N, which is placed over the firing-pin H. The opposite end, of this spring bears against the diaphragm or partition D.
An elongated slot 0, is cut in one side of the barrel of the gun through which. a bolt P, passes and is connected to the firingpin by screwing said bolt into the rim or by casting same integral therewith. The object of this bolt is, to pull the firing 'pin back to its cocked position.
A groove Q, is cut into the top side of the barrel just ahead of the outer end of the firing-pin, for receiving and holding a paper cap.
We will now describe the operation of our invention, which is as follows:
Assuming the parts to be in the position as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2, which represents their position after they have been fired, the gun is now ready to be cocked following manner Grasp the knob on the bolt P, and pull straight back toward the breech; this will cause the spring N, to be compressed and allow the end of the firing-pin having the hook J, to pass under the end of the trip K, which will engage the hook and hold thefiring-pin in the cocked position. The upper end of the trigger L, resting against the lower end of the trip K, everything is in readiness for-firing.

A cap is placed in the groove Q, just prior to cocking or after cocking, at the will of the operator.
Vhen desiring to shoot, simply pull the trigger L, back which will cause the upper end thereof to press against the lower end of the trip K, pushing it forward, which will in turn, cause the upper end of said .trip to become disengaged from the hook on the end of the firing-pin, allowing said pin to travel forward with considerable velocity, when the shoulder on the front of the pin will come into contact with the cap and explode the same.
Having described our invention, what we claim is;
l. A new article of manufacture, in the form of a gun, the general contour of which is that of an army rifle, comprising a stock, lock-case and barrel, diaphragms or partitions located within the barrel which are provided with openings or recesses through which the firing-pin is inserted, a disk secured on said firingpin, a spring placed over and around said pin one end of which is adapted to press against said disk,
its opposite end pressing against one of the diaphragms or partltlons, a hook formed on one end of the firing-pin and a shoulder formed on its opposite end, all substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
2. A new article of manufacture, in the form of a gun, the general ,contour of which is that of an army rifle, vcolnprisin a stock, lock-case and barrel, a trip and trigger contained in said locl'-case, said trip being adapted to engage the hook on the end of the firing-pin its opposite end engaging the upper end of the trigger, a slot formed in the side and a groove in the top of the barrel, all substantially as shown and for the purposes described. 7
