Description

H. MYERS.
Washing-Machines.
No. 136,855, Patented March18,1873.

HIRAM MYERS, or HIGHLAND, KANSAS.
IMPiROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forinin g part of Letters Patent No. 136,855, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM MYERS, of Highland, county of Doniphan, State of Kansas,
have invented certain Improvements in Washclothes are thoroughly rubbed and cleansed in one operation without first rubbing them and afterward boiling them, which is the commonly-used method. j
In order to describe my'invention more fully I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a plan view, with the lid raised, of a wash-boiler embodying my invention. Fig. II is a detached cut-sectional view of the interior cylinder.
A and B are two circular wooden or metallic disks, held apart a certain distance by aid of wooden or metallic slats 0Q. The disks A and B are cut through a certain distance from the center, thus forming two separate pieces, a and b, which are held apart at the same distance as A and B by aid of slats D D, and forming a lid, L, which is held to the disks A and B by aid of the metallic support E,pin c, spring-catch F, and-recessd. In the center of the disks A and B; are out two large holes, G and H, into the edges of which is inserted the netting, of wire or cord, forming a cylinder, 1. I One side of this cylinder is connected with cord or wire to the slat G, which thus forms a division-wall, J. In the interior of the lid L, opposite the division-wall J, is formed another division-wall, K, of cord or wire, being suspended between the slat D and a slat, M, placed between the end pieces of the lid a and and b. Cord or wire being stretched between the slats C G D D inclose the cylinder I and the two division-walls J and K. The thusformed cylinder S is suspended between the walls N and O of the wash-boiler R by aid of the axle P, held to the cylinder S by aid of the pieces E and g and piece h, to which is fastened the axle Q, crank T, and lfandle V. A lid, U, closes the boiler, when the washing is performed. 7
Inorder to operate my improved wash-boiler water and soap-suds are introduced into the boiler R, and the clothes throughthe lid L in-' to the cylinder S. Boiling water may he used,
' or the boiler may be placed upon the fire with cold water, and made to boil under the operation of washing the clothes. By turning the cylinder S the.clothes w1ll be rubbed against the sides of the wire or cord without entangling themselves in one another, and prevented from doing so by aid of the division-walls and cell At the same time the boiling Witnesses:
