Description

l. HOLROYD.
Hooks and Eyes for Tackle-Blocks.
NO. 136,833, PatentedMarch18,1 873.
WITNESSES. I
AM finom-umommlc co. MY. (osammsk' FRacsss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HOLROYD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOKS AND EYES FOR TACKLE-BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,833, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whamjt mag "concern:
Be it known that. I, J 015m HOLROYD, of the. city and county of Washington, in the Distriet of Columbia, have invented a new, use- 7 forming part of this specification.
The nature or essence of my invention con- I sists in turning the nib or point of the hook from the block so that it will catch against the under side of the eye and prevent the hook from unhooking and hold the block horizontally, or in such an angle or position as may be. desired.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a side elevation of a tackle-block and hook and eye with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
In the above-mentioned drawing, A is a tackle-block, which may have one or more sheaves. This block may be made of metal or of wood, and strapped with metal, the strap being extended at the head of the block to form the hook B, which is bent around so as to pass through the metal eye 0, and the point is turned or bent from the block to form a nib, D, which catches under the eye 0 and holds the block in a horizontal plane, and allows it to swing either way in the horizontal plane, but will not unhook, unless the tail of the block is raised up to about an angle of fortyfive degrees, when the book may be taken out of the eye and replaced when required.
The above-described improvement is adaptedto gun-tackles--that is, tackles for training guns, and for other service about a ship, where the hauling is horizontal or but little inclined. m, e p,
What I'claim as my invention and impfive ment in hooks for tackle-blocks, is-
\ Turning the nib or point of the hook from the block, substantially as described, so that it will catch against the under side of the eye and prevent the hook from unhooking, and hold the block horizontally or at such an angle or position as may be desired.
JOHN HOLROYD.
