To all whom it mag concern:
Beit known that I, ARoHIn JoNns, a citizen of the United States. residing at Boonville, in the county of WVarrick and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Scuttles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in buckets and the like and more particularly to the bottoms thereof, the primary object of the invention being to provide bottoms which are detachably connected to buckets. and the like whereby the old bottoms may be disconnected and dis carded when incapable of further use and new ones substituted.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature whereby the bottom may be quickly assembled or disassembled with the bucket through the medium of means whereby the bottom may be threadedly associated with the bucket.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the above character, and means for preventing accidental dislocation of the bottom from the bucket when it is connected therewith.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device embodying a construction whereby the contents of the bucket are prevented from escaping from the connection between the bottom and the bucket.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bucket of the above nature embodying a construction which precludes the usual wear imposed upon the lower part of the bucket body from constant use thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a bucket which is strong, durable. relatively inexpensive to manufacture and which is highly eflicient in practice.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application and wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the several views.

In. the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred em bodiment of the invention, the numeral 6 designates a coal scuttle having a body portion 7,. the upper portion of which is of the well known construction and includes a guard element 8 carried by the throat of the body portion, a bail 9 and the usual tilting handle 10.
To the inner surface of the lower portion of the body portion is secured a reinforcing band 11 by rivets 12 and this band extends to the lower edge of the body portion as clearly seen in Fig. 2. Rivets 13 are passed through the band and body portion and also through the upper portion of a complementary member 14 forming a part of the body portion for rigidly securing the same to the outer surface of the lower part of the body portion proper. The complementary memberflares outwardly and downwardly a substantial distance, and the lower portion of the complementary member is provided with external screw threads 15 or screw beads. The lower edge of the complementary member is inturned to present an inwardly extending flange 16 which has its extremity 17 bent upwardly to embrace the lower edges of the band 11 and body portion.
It is, .of course, understood that the com plementary member is circular in configuration whereby the threads thereof properly co-act with an internally screw threaded upstanding flange 18 of the detachable bottom 19. The, edge 20 of the bottom is curved downwardly, then upon itself to engage the ground and to support the bottom 19 in spaced relation thereto. In order to preelude dust, dirt and the like from escaping between the detachable bottom and the complementary member, a gasket 21 is clamped between the inwardly extending flange 16 of the complementary member and the bottom 19.
The means I provide for preventing accidental displacement of the bottom from the bucket consists of a stri of resilient material forming a spring catch 22. The upper end of this catch is disposed vertically and is riveted or otherwise secured to the upper portlon of the complementary memc e O in Fig. 5
ber. The catch is bent to incline downwardly and outwardly. of the bucket to conform to the outwardly flaring portion of the complementary member and the lower end of the former is directed downwardly to be contiguous with the flange of the bottom. The lower end of the spring catch is equipped with a vertically arranged slot 23 upon opposite sides of which are provided a pair of oppositely disposed openings 24.
A' locking element, as more clearly shown consists of a shank 25, one end of which is reduced as at 26 to operate in an opening provided'at a suitable point in the flange 18. The extremity of. the reduced portion 26 is offset after it has been associated with its opening whereby the locking element is swiveled to the flange. The opposite end of the shank 25 is equipped with an enlarged head 27 which is of substan tially the same dimensions as the slot 23 and is adapted to be projected therethrough when the bottom is secured to the body portion of the bucket. A pair of oppositely disposed pins or projections 28 are carried by the head 27, upon the inner face 1 thereof and are directed inwardly to be received in-the openings 24: of the catch when the head 27 is disposed transversely of the slot 23. It isof course understood that the spring catch and the locking element are so positioned upon the complementar member andfiange 18 respectively where y their proper locking relationship may be assumed when the flange 18 is screwed tight upon the complementary member. 7
From the above description of the construction it will be obvious that the bottom may be easily and quickly associated with or detached from the complementary member and a new bottom connected therewith. In coal scuttles and other buckets having an inseparable bottom, it is known that frequently the bottom wears out before the body portion of the bucket and in some instances the lower end of the body part also becomes worn and batteredby various matter being dumped into the bucket and pounding against the sides thereof after striking the bottom. To obviate such damage, the band 11 is provided as described above.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that various changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, and dimensions, may be made without departing from the spirit of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to se-. cure by Letters Patent, is
1. A coal scuttle comprising a body portion, a reinforcing band secured to the inher surface of the lower part thereof, a complementary member having its upper end embracing the lower .endof the body portion, and its lower end e bracing the lower edges of saidband and body portion, and a detachable bottom connected to said complementary member. 1
' 2. A coal scuttlecomprising abody portion, a detachable bottom screwed thereon, a spring catch secured to said body portion, and a locking element carried by the bottom and adapted to be engaged by said catch.
3. A coal scuttle comprising a body portion, a detachable bottom screwed thereon, a spring catch secured to the body portion and having an elongatedslot therein, a rotatable locking element carried by the bot tom and adapted to extend through said slot, said element having a head adapted to be arranged transversely of said slot when in a locked position;
d. A coal scuttle comprising a body portion, a detachable bottom screwed thereon, a spring catch secured to the body portion and having an elongated slot therein, said catch being further equipped with openings on opposite sides of said slot, a rotatable locking element carried by the bottom and adapted to extend through a slot, a head on the locking element, and a pair of oppositely disposed projections carried by the head for reception in said openings of thecatch when the head is in a locked position.
