To all whom it may concern:
Be it lrnown that 1, DAVID Brvrson, a citizen of the United States residing at Wok ford, in the county of Pierce and Eitate oi" North I" iota, have invented new and useful improvements in lrlural Mail Posts and Boxes, or which the following is specilication.
This invention relates to mail boxes or receptacles and aims to provide an article oi this character which is especially adapted for rural use.
The object of the invention is to provide a box which is simple and durable or". construction and which will effectually protect its contents from the weather.
.Another object is the provision of novel means for supporting the hot; so as to renits elevation convenient to a person on horse back or within a vehicle, or to persons standingupon the ground, the box he provided with a hinged cover or lid, which is controlled by the position oi the boa; upon the support.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the support comprises a standard 10 of tubular construction. which has threadedly secured upon its upper end a rounded cap or closure 11.
Mounted for sliding movement upon the standard 10 is a bracket 12, carrying at one end a sleeve 13. having a sliding; (it upon the standard. l l hile the standard and sleeve are herein shown as circular in cross section, it is, of course. obvious that the shape may be varied. as desired.
Mounted upon the outer end oi the bracket 12 is a box or receptacle 14. which is provided with a lid or cover 15 hinged along its rear edge, as shown at 16. The free end of the lid or cover 15 has connected thereto one end of a chain or other flexible connection 17 the opposite end of which 15 con specification of Letters Patent.

Secured to the bracket 12 is one end of a chain or cable 18, which passes upwardly through an opening 19 into the cap 11 and around a pulley 20, rotatably mounted within the said cap upon aspindle 21. The chain or cable 1.8 extends down wardly within the standard 10 and is pro VltlGCl with a counter-luilance weight 22, the latter being so proportioned as to hold the bracket 12 in any adjusted position upon the standard.
W hen the bracket 1s raised to the position shown in l. the lid of the box will be closed by its own weight. but when lowered to the position shown in Fig. 3, the said lid will he raised through the medium of the connection 17. thus slidingly niountino; the box upon the standard, the latter will be in convenient position to be reached by a person on horse bzclt or within a vehicle. but may be readily lowered to within reach of a person upon the ground. H desired. the chain or cable 23 inay be secured to the outer end of the box i l to aid in brii-ig'ing it to a lowered position. The box may also be provided with a hasp padlock or with other locking means to prevent unauthorized opening. The usual indicator may also be pivoted to the lid.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details oi construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.

The combination with a hollow post or support. of a substantially U shaped elbow positioned over the upper end of said post, a bracket. a sleeve carried by the bracket and mounted for sliding; movement upon the post or support and enrgageable with the elbow to li. t its upward movement. a receptacle secured upon the bracket. a biased closure or the receptacle. a flexible connec tion between the post and closure and a flexible connection having; one end secured to the bracket and passing into the hollow post tirough the elbow and a weight slidable within the post and secured to the opposite end of the second mentioned flexible connection. 7
