FREDERICK S. YOUNG, 0F PORTAGE'VILLE, MISSOURI.
POTATO-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Application filed January 23, 1920. Serial No. 353,539.
To all to 7mm may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portageville, in the county of New Madrid and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Potato-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for cutting seed potatoes into pieces containing one or more eyes and the principal ob ect of the invention is to provide means for cuttmg the potato into the desired number of pieces in one operation.
The invention can also be used for cuttlng apples or other fruit into two or more pleces.
Another object of the invention is to provide a vertically arranged knife and hor1- zontally arranged knives with means for detachably connecting said knives to the device so that the desired knives may be removed for cutting the potatoes into a smaller number of pieces.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a manually operated slidable mem her for pushing the potatoes against the knives and foot operated means for adjusting the potatoes relative to the sliding member so that potatoes of various sizes may be out.
This invention also consists in certain other features or" construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompany ng drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a side view of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.
F ig. l is a cross section.
Fig. 5 is a detail view or the sliding member.
Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the knives and the manner of connecting them together.
In these views 1 indicates a table which includes the legs 2, the side pieces 3 and the braces 4. An inclined chute 5 is carried by the table adjacent each end thereof and these chutes extend in opposite directions as shown. A vertically movable platform 6 is located between the side bars of the table with its ends extending over the upper ends of the chutes. This platform is carried by a downwardly depending arm 7 which passes through an opening 8 in one of the cross braces of the central pair of legs and the lower end of this arm is pivotally connected to an upwardly extending bar 9 which is hinged at its lower end to a foot pedal 10 which is pivotally mounted at its ends to the lower ends of the central pair of legs. Thus by actuating said pedal with the foot the platform will be moved vertically. The platform is provided with a centrally arranged slot 11 to receive a vertically extending knife 12. This knife has its lower end bent at right angles and bolted to the cross piece through which the arm 7 ex tends. This knife is provided with a cutting edge at each side thereof and it is also provided with spaced notches 12 in each cutting edge. I also provide a pair or transversely extending knives 13 which extend across the upper part of the table and have their ends bolted to the side bars thereof. These knives are spaced apart by the blocks 1% through which the bolts which connect the knives with the side bars extend. These knives 13 are provided with centrally arranged openings 15 and slits 15 which are formed in the walls of the openings. These slits are adapted to receive the edges of the vertically extending knife, and after the laterally extending knives reach the slots in said vertical knife the said laterally extending knives are turned to place them at right angles to said vertical knife, the walls of the opening of each lateral knife engaging the slots in the vertical knife to permit this turning movement.
The side bars of the table are provided with guideways 16 and the pusher or sliding member 17 is slidably mounted on said side bars and has parts engaging said guideways. This member is formed with the large opening 18 and with the upper and lower horizontal slots 19 which extend from one end to a point an appreciable distance from the other end. A vertical slot 20 is also formed in one end of the member, said slot communicating with the opening 18 and also with the horizontal slots. The side end of the member is formed with the handle 21 and with the guard 22.
The potatoes to be out are placed one at a I is moved far enough to force the potato beyond the knives and off the end of the platform so that the pieces of potato will fall down the chute into a suitable receptacle.
'Another potato is then placed on the opposite side of the knives and the. sliding member moved in an opposite direction so as to bring the inner wall thereof against the potato and force the potato against the knives, it being understood that when the sliding member reaches the end of its first movement-the kniveswill lie within the open ing in said member and the potato is placed within said. opening between the knives'and the end wall of said opening which onthe return movement of the sliding-member it is i movedfar enough to force the pieces of po tato off the end of. the platform into the said chute. It will thus be seen that a potato is cuton each movement of the sliding member.
lVhen desired one or more of the knives may be removed so as to cut the potatoes or other articles into a less number of pieces.
It s thought from the foregoing descrrp tion that the advantages andnovel features of my invention will bereadily apparent- I desire it to be understood that 1 may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope offthe appended claims.
hat I claim is V v1. A device: of the class described comprising a table,.vertically and horizontally arranged knives supported bysaid table, a shdable member having slots therein for receiving said knives for pressing the articles 7 to be out against the knives and a vertically movable platform for supporting the articles to be out, said platform being located below the sliding member.
2. A device of the class described comprising a table, vertically and horlzontally arranged knives supported by said table, a
slidable member having slots therein for rec eiving said knives for pressing the articles to be out against the knives and means for adjusting the position of the potatoes on the table in relation to the knives, said means consisting of a vertically movable platform, a foot pedal and means for connecting the pedal to said platform.
A device of the class described comprising a table, a vertically movable platform thereon, chutes supported by said table with their upper ends adjacent the ends of the platform. a foot pedal connected with the platfornna vertical knife supported by the table, horizontally arranged knives associated with the vertical knife and a sliding member on the table having vertical and horizontal slots therein for receiving the knives for forcing the potatoes against said knives.
i. A device of the class described comprising a table, a vertical two-edge knife supported thereby, horizontally arranged twoedged knives supported by the table and associated with the vertical knife, a member slidably mounted on the table and having a central opening and horizontal and vertical slots communicating with the openingand adapted to receive the knives for forcing the articles to be out against said knives.
5. A device of the class described com-,
prising a table, a vertically arranged twoedged knife thereon, said knife having spaced notches in its edges, horizontally arranged two-edged knives supported by the table and having openings therein, the walls of which engage thenotches in the vertical knife" forjholding said knives together and slidable means for" forcing the artime to be cut against said knives.
