HALSEY W. TAYLOR, OF WARREN, OHIO.
DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t d F b 8 1 2 Application filed January 10; 1819. Serial no. 270.463.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HALSEY W. TAYLOR, citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Fountalns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to that class of drinking fountains in which a stream of water is directed upwardly at an angle over a bowl or receptacle, and the object of the present invention is to provide a nozzle or delivery member of special construction which will form a relatively thin and elevated drinking sector in a stream dellvered at an angle, in this way greatly promoting drinking from a running stream as well as providing a sanitary deliveryof the water.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of the stream-forming and delivery member, with a stream of water lssuing therefrom in dotted llnes. F1g. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1, with a protecting cowl 'in dotted lines about the delivery member.
Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. 4 a vertical section of the said member alone.
In detail, the invention comprises a nozzle or delivery member 2 made of cast metal and formed with a relatively large central water passage 3 terminating in an elongated slot or mouth 4 of less cross-sectional area through which the water is discharged as a fiat stream at an angle, edge upwardly, to one side of the member. In other words, this slot or mouth 4 extends vertically lengthwise at an angle so that a relatively thin fiat stream of water is projected edgewise at an angle from the member, As a result, the stream quickly takes another shape at a short distance from the mouth. Thus, the stream spreads horizontally after it issues as a fiat vertical stream, then this horizontally spreading section of the stream comes together or converges and distends itself again vertically into a drinking mound at the highest elevation of the angle of discharge and before descending and breaking. This drinking mound of water is thin enough to enter the mouth from the side and afford a good draft or drink, and the force of the stream is also somewhat spent at this mound so that drinking is more easily accomplished than 1n a round stream.
A stream as described may be produced by a flat tube 5 placed vertically at an angle at the outlet end of a water distributing member having a round channel or water passage 3, and such tubes may be formed more accurately and uniform when made separately than where the slot is cast in the member itself. However, the latter mode of making the device falls within my broader concept, and the form or shape of member 2 may be modified or changed and other mater als used than as described without materially affecting the invention. For example, the inner walls of the water passage 3 or the mouth 4 may be of flaring shape or curved to further promote the forming of the stream on lines as indicated. As shown, the water passage 3 is round in its main port10n and tapered at its outlet end to correspond with the shape of the flat tube.
I prefer to make member 2 of cast metal with a flat spreading base or flange 6, and with a screw-threaded stem 7 having an angular enlargement 8. The upper or head end of member 2 is also preferably provided wlth an open yoke or guard ring 9 through which the stream is projected and which prevents closure of the mouth 4 or spraying or squirting of the water by the thumb or finger.
The device may be installed in any suitable bowl or receptacle or used as a wall fitting, and in the present showing it is located within a protecting cowl 10 of vitreous china. Where the pressure of water is too great or irregular I may also use a perforated screwplug 11 in the entrance end of stem 7.
What I claim is:
1. In a drinking fountain, a nozzle or delivery member having a water passage with a narrow elongated outlet of uniform width extending vertically at an angle and adapted to project a substantially fiat stream of water edge upward from the mouth of said outlet to one side of said member.
2. In a drinking fountain, a nozzle or delivery member having a water passage, in combination with a separate fiat tube within the outlet end thereof.
3.- In a. drinking fountain, a nozzle or devertical slot inclined to project a flattened livery member having an elongatedmouth stream upwardly at an angle and provided 10 arranged with its greater length extending with a guard having an opening adjacent vertically at an angle and provided with a said slo 5 relatively larger water passage of tapering Signed at Cleveland, in the county of form communieatin with said mouth. Cu ahoga, and'State of Ohio, this 12th day 4. In a drinking ountain, a nozzle memof ecember, 1918. her having a water passage terminating in a i HALSEY W. TAYLOR.
