Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- sILAsE. ToTTEN, JE., 0E NEw YORK, N. vY.
IMPROVEMENT lN SASH-HOLDERS FOR CARRIAGE-WINDOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,793, dated March 1l, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs E. TOTTEN, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description there of, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming parto this specification, in which drawing- I Figure l is a plan view of my device when applied to the closed sashes of a carriage. Fig. 2 is a similar view when the sashes are opened. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of this invention on a larger scale than in the previous figures.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
rlhis invention relates particularly to that class of fasteners which are intended for securing or holding the windowsashes in 'glassfront carriages; and the object of my invention isrto provide a device,-which can be adjusted to a sash of any desired form or size,
or which, when one sash is shoved within the i other, can be made to abut against the inner sash, and by the pressure thus exerted upon the sashes they are held tight in their Vframes and are effectually prevented from rattling or shaking by the motion of the carriage, which, it is a well-known fact, greatly disturbs the occupants ofthe vehicle.` My' fastener may, however, be applied to sashes on windows in buildings, railroad cars, or steamboats. My invention consists in a slotted segmental stop or'fastener, whose curved edge is provided with an elastic pad that abuts against the sash, said slotted stop working on a thumb or set'screw, rising from a bracket on the sill of the window-frame, by means of which screw the stop is secured in position, in such a manner that it holds the sash or sashes tight in their frame, and prevents the same from shaking or rattling.
In the example represented by the drawing, the letter A designates the front segmental sill or frame of a glass-front carriage, in which slide the segmental sashes B B. When the sashes B B are to be opened it is necessaryv to slide one within the other in the frame, (see Fig. 2,) and when a permanent pivoted,
stop is used the additional bulk given to the sash will not allow the stop to be brought at right angles to the same, and said stop is rendered entirely useless. My stop or fastener C is adjustable, being provided with a slot, af, that works on a thumb or set screw, D, which rises from a bracket, E, that is secured to the sill ot' the window-frame. The screw` D on its lower end is provided with a disk or washer, b, (see Fig. 3,) to prevent it from screwing out of its socket in the bracket. One end of my stop is curved or segmental,
and it is provided with a pad, F, of Indiaf y rubber or other elastic material, which presses up against the sash -B by means of which an elastic pressure is exerted upon the windowsash, and all rattling and shaking of the Same is completely deadcned, and at the same time the surface of the sash is not marred. When the position of my stop or fastener is to be altered, the screw D is loosened, when the the stop can freely be moved to any position, and again securedby retightening the screw. WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The slotted segmental stop or fastener C,
provided with an elastic pad, F, that abuts against the sash B, said stop working on a set or thumb screw, D, that rises from the bracket E, secured to the sill of the windowframe, substantially as and for the purpose described.
SILAS E. TOTTEN, JR. Witnesses W. HAUEF, E. F. KAsTENHUBER.
