GARTER.

Be it lrnovrn that I, Josnrrr C. HAsLAM. a citizen ot the United States, residing in the City and county oi San Francisco and State or' California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garters, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in garters wherein a biiurcated member'7 aranged to constrict, by winding, the upper portion oit a staking or sock to provide greater rictional contact between said stocking' and the limb of a wearer, operates in conjunction with means for rotating the :aine and for preventing` rotation thereof to i said stockingin position.

A still further obiect is to provide an improved `zarter arranoed to extend 1Lhe area ot pressure of a sto^ltinq or the like over the limb ot a wearer whereby a suilicient area ot Contact may be provided to firmly hold the stockinq in position without bringiner undue or excessive pressure upon said limb.

I accomplish these and other obiects bv means of the improved device disclosed in the drawinos forming a part ot the present specification. wherein like characters of .reference are used to desi nrnate similar parts throne-hout the said specification and drawinfrs. and in which:

Referring to the drawings the numerall l is used to designate a split or biiurcated member7 preferably of resilient or flexible material, arranged to engage both sides or surfaces of the upper or ribbed portion 2 of a sock or stocking 3. f

A. spatular member 4 is pivotally connected to the upper portion ot the bifurcated or split member 1 as at 5, whereby said member l may be rotated to wind the fabric of said upper portion upon the member l and thereby constrict the periphery oi? that portion of the sto'lring to provide greater frictional contact ot the sock 0r stocking` l with the limbo of the wearer. Y

The operation is as tollows:

The bifurcated or split member l is placed on the upper edqe ot the ribbed or elastic portion 2 of the sock 3 with the bifurcations thereof en .eaqinfr both sides of the saidl ribbed portion 2 ot the saclr 3 is placed within the split or slot of the split' member l. with the spatular member 4 extending longitudinally from its pivotal point 5 ot the member l as diselosed in Fin'. 1 of the drawinos. Bv means of the spatular member 4 the split or bifurcatedpmember 1 is rotated to wind a portion of the elastic or ribbed portion 2 thereon and thereby constrict the periphery otv the upper edre of said 'sock to provide a greater frictional Contact between said ribbed portion 2 and the leg 6 of the wearer and thereby retain said sock in position.

By providinfr member l of suicient length it is obvious that the pressure will be disributed over an annular path of considerable width and area, and while a greater pressure is obtained than in the present method of pulling upwardly on the upper edge of the soci; or stocking at one or more points, said pressure being distributed over a greater area provides a llesser pressure peix square inch.

Therefore, there can be no danger of providing or applying a pressure great enough to prevent proper circulation within the limb upon whirh the-sock is worn. But it should be noted that various degrees of pressure may be applied and that said pressure will be in direct proportion to the number ot turns or revolutions made by the biturcated or split member l.

To prevent unwinding of the elastic portion, the spatular member 4: is rotated upon its pivot and positioned between the'elastic portion of the sock and the limb oi the wearer, as disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

This position is also disclosed in Fie. 5 of the drawings wherein it is apparent that the spatular member fi is iirmly held between the elastic portion 2 of the soclr 3 and the limb 6 ofthe wearer and while in this position is held against movement which will prevent rotation ot' the bifurcated member l in a direction which will unwind the soclr therefrom.

It is obvious from the oregoing that I have provided an improved garter adapted to restrict the elastic or upper portion of a sock or stocking or the like to ingrease rictional Contact between said sock and limb to retain said sock or stocking in position.

It is also obvious that by distributing the pressure of said soelr or stocking over a comparatively greater area of Contact that a more firm Contact may be obtained between the sock and limb without excessive pressure.

It is further evident that by means oif' my improved garter a soelt or stocking may be easily and readily held in position without the use of encircling cords, elastirs or other similar media.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. er garter comprising a split member arranged to engage the upper edge oi a stocking; and means pivotally mounted upon said split member and arranged to rotate the same to wind said upper edge upon said member to constrict the periphery, and thereby provide greater trictional engagement oi said upper edge with the limb of a wearer to retain said stocking in position.

ri garter comprising a split member arranged to engage the upper edge oi a stoel;- ing; and means oivotally mounted upon said split member and arranged to rotate the same to wind said upper edge upon said member to constrict the periphery, and thereby provide greater 'frictionai engageent oi said upper edge with the limb oi' a wearer to retain said stocking in position, said means being arranged to prevent unwinding orn said member when said means are positioned between said stocking and said limb.

A garter comprising a biiurcated member arranged to engage the upper portion oi a stoelring on each side thereof; ane means il 'votally connected to said member for rotating the same to wind said upper portieri the stocking thereon, whereby said portion may be conftiicted to provide greater 'irietional Contact of said stoel-ring with the limb ot a wearer, said means being arranged to be positioned between said stocking and the limb o i the to prevent unwinding ot' said stoc .ng iiom saidmember.
