To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID BOURQUE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Amesbury, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in separable Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to separable fasteners and in particular to that type of fastener where-in the interengagement of the the parts is released by the manipulation of an actuating element. My invention aims particularly to-provide a simple and durable fastener of this ty )e and the particular im provements by which this purpbse is attained will be best understood by reference to the following description of an illustrat'iv'e embodiment of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 5 is a plan of the button portion by the line 2-2 of manipulation of which the fastener is released.
Referring to Fig. 1, the fastener shown embodies as is usual male and female portions, the former consisting of a stud memher 7 provided with an enlarged head 9 having a shoulder, conveniently abrupt, defining a neck 10. The jaw in the female member clasps about this neck and locks behind the shoulder of the head, as is usual.
The constructional novelties of the fastener here shown are embodied in the female member or socket which in the embodiment shown comprises-acup-like member 11 with which cooperates a washer 13 to provide a jaw receiving casing; The washer 13 (see Fig. 4) may be provided with suitable apertures 15 to receive prongs 17 forming extensions of the flange of the cup-like member 11, which prongs may also, as shown in Fig. 1, pass through the member to which the socket is secured and be clenched on a suitable washer 19. The washer 13 and the front of the member 11 are suitably apertured centrally to pass the stud 7 and a suitable resilient jaw having engaging parts intersecting the apertures ls'provided, which preferably takes the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The jaw there shown is a spring cut from sheet metal and comprises the nearly circular marginal portion 21 provided with. inwardly extending arms 23 which are adapted to lie on either side of the apertures in the socket. To position the spring within the socket the washer 13 may have projections 25 struck up therefrom, conveniently by cutting tongues outwardly from the central aperture therein, these projections 25 being adapted to enter between the arms of the spring on either side of the aperture and thus properly to position the spring.

"The button herein shown comprises a cylindrical cup 27 provided with an outturned flange 29. The cup 27 is inserted through the central aperture in the casing member 11 from the left hand side, is retained in position by the flange 29 and canturn in the aperture.
by a button rotatably mounted on the socket The member 27 is provided with suitable projections by which turning movement thereof can cause the disengagement of the spring arms 23 from behind the head 9 of the stud and for this purpose in the present instance certain parts of the flange are cut out and bent inwardly to form continuations of the cylindrical side wall of the cup, such projections 31 being adapted to enter between the arms of the spring, as shown in Fig. 2. If the button member 27'is rotatedthe projections 31 will move to the position shown in Fig. 3 and since the spring is prevented from'moving bodily in the casing by the projections 25 the arms 23 of the spring will be bent to the position shown in Fig. 3 clear of the sides of the head (which is indicatedin the figure by dottedlines) and the parts maybe separated.
matically thrusting the socket away from the stud when the engagement of the jaw is broken and herein the button 27 provides for housing a suitable kick-out spring which may be a spiral spring 33 acting against a washer 35 loosely received in the cup. When the stud is engaged with the socket the head makes contact with the washer 35, presses it downwardly in the cup and compresses the spring 33. When the button is turned to release the jaw from the stud the spring will expand and move the socket to the right, throwing the jaw over the shoulder of the head 9 and separating definitely the two parts of the fastener. For positioning the washer 35 in the hollow button 27 portions of the flange 29 may be cut 37 which may be bent inwardly to retain the washer 35 in position (see Fig. 5).
An important advantage of the construction herein shown is case of assembly. It will be noted that all of the parts of the socket can be simply placed one within the other. Thus, starting with the part 11, the button 27 with which the spring and the washer have already been assembled in a simple manner is simply dropped in from the left. The sheet metal spring which does not have to be compressed or manipulated to be put into position isthen dropped in from the left. The washer 13 is then slid over the prongs and the socket is assembled ready to be fastened in position. These operations are all simple and can be automaticallycarried out by means of suitable machinery which will pick the parts from successive race-ways and bring them together. The parts in themselves are simple and readily made by stamping or similar operations.
Having thus described in detail the particular embodiment of my invention here shown, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the following claims.

1. A fastener comprising an apertured w therein intersecting casing, a resilient j the aperture, a ho low button swiveled in out to form tongues the casing and having provision for displacing said jaw and a kick-out spring housed by said button and adapted to bear on a stud member for the fastener.
2. A fastener comprising a casing having apertured front and rear walls, a jaw in the casing having a pair of yielding arms intersecting the apertures, prongs on the rear wall entering between said arms to position the jaw, a button received in the aperture of the front wall and having a flange retaining it therein and prongs on said button entering between said arms for operating the jaw.
3. A fastener as described in claim wherein the second mentioned prongs are struck up portions of said flange.
4. A fastener comprising a cup-like casing having an aperture, a button received by the aperture and having a flange to retain it therein, a spring received by the cusing having arms intersecting said aperture. said button having projections received between said arms and a washer. providing a rear wall for the casing having means for positioning said spring.
5. A fastener comprisinga cup-like casing having an aperture, abutton received by the aperture and having a flange to retain it therein, a spring received by the casing having arms intersecting said aperture, said button having projections received between said arms and a washer providing a rear wall for the casing having a central aperture provided with upturned marginal portions received between the arms of the spring to position the same.
6. A fastener comprising a casing having apertured front and rear walls, a spring received by the casing having a marginal connecting portion and arms adapted to intersect the apertures, means to position the spring and a button swiveled in the front wall having projections received between said arms on opposite sides of the apertures.
