MlruosmPH/c on MY (osaunns's mac UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
GEORGE H. JEWETT, OF SALINE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JACOB HORTON, OF SAME PLACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,732, dated'March ll, 1873;
fastening, as herein set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art towhich my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will 'now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which the figure is aperspective view of my whip-socket with its fastening.
The whip-socket is made of sheet metal in one piece, cut or stamped out and then bent to form the top A, springjaws B B, open back 1 0, bottom ring D, and bottom E, all as shown.
The top part A is concave and curved to form a rest for the whip-handle, against which it is held by the springjaws B B. The whiphandle is inserted in the ring 1) on the bottom E and pressed in between the jaws, or passed down between them, which jaws thus hold the whip, exposing the handle to view. i l
The whip-socket is fastened to the dashboard by the following means: To the back of the socket is riveted or otherwise firmly attached a brace, a, with two curved arms or prongs, b b, upon the outer ends of which are formed enlargements or projections These arms or prongs are passed through holes in the dashboard, and a plate or disk, G, is placed on the ends. This plate or disk is provided with two slots, (1 d, and upon the outer surface of the plate, along the inner edge of each slot, is an incline, e, against which the projections 41 i hear when the plate is put on the arms, so that when the plate is turned, by a wrench or otherwise, the socket will be firmly wedged to the dash.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i The combination, with a skeleton whip-socket, constructed substantially as described, of the whip-socket fastening, consisting of the arms b b having projections '5 i, and the plate G having slots (1 d and inclines e c, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereuntoset my hand this 10th day of December, 1872.
GEORGE H.-"JEWETT.
