Epecifieatien of Letters Patent.
Application filed July as, rare. Serial No. 312,4e9.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, HENRY J. GAISMAN, a citizen ot' the United titates, and resident or l Voodmere, in the county oi Queens and liltate of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Boxes, 01 which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to improvements 1n bones adapted to contain various articles, such as razors, strops, blades and the like, and has for its object to provide a box into and trom which a folded razor strep may be readily inserted and removed.
lln my application :tor Letters Patent Serial No. 12d,932 l have disclosed a box of the general class herein illustrated adapted to contain a safety razor, strep and blades, and my present improvements, while following the general idea of the aforesaid box, is designed to permit the opposing sides of the box to be opened outwardly to expose an interior compartment at both its sides whereby a tolded strep may be inserted in such compartment atone side and removed from either side by merely pushing the same trom one side toward the other, the side walls of the box being out of the way for such operation. A turther improvement resides in providing means to maintain one of the side walls resiliently over said compartment for use when the strop is not being removed or inserted.
My invention also comprises novel details of improvement that will be hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereot,
wherein-'- Figure 1 is a partly broken perspective view 01: my improvements showing the parts opened out;
Fig. 2 is a partly broken plan view thereof illustrating discharge or the strep;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, illustrating the parts closed, parts being omitted; i
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4:l in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a detail of a portion of the box;
Fig. 6 is a side view of the box partly open and partly in section, and I Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 1n Fig. 6.
The outer or body portion of the box as more fully 1E?! therebetween in spaced relation forming stitlening members for the bottom, sides and flap portions. The edges of material 6 are shown folded over the lining at G and stitched through the parts 6, 7 whereby the sti'li'ening pieces are retained in place. Said materials 6, 7' along the portions 13, 1 1, 15, 1b are toldable in the nature oi hinged joints, whereby the parts described may be folded in box-like term as illustrated in Fig. 1. Complementary fastening devices 11', 18, such] as glove fasteners, may be provided upon side 2 andupon flap 5 for securing the parts in closed position. The parts may be spread out as in Figs. 1 and 2 to permit access to the contents of the box. l Vithin the boX several compartments are provided for different articles. I have shown transversely disposed wall 19 spaced above the bottom by means of spaced partitions 20 projecting upwardly from webs 21 extending along the bottom, from which webs upturned end portions 22 extend spaced from the adjacent ends of wall 19 and torming the ends of the box. The space between the bottom and wall 19 forms a compartment a, and the spaces between the upturned end portions] 22 and the wall 19 provide compartments 6 to receive various articles, such as the frame or head portion of agraaor in one compartment and the blades in the other compartment. The wall 19 is shown provided. with a longitudinally disposed seat or recess 19' adapted to receive the handle of a razor, which'seat or recess leads through" the ends of wall 19. Said seat is shown between strips or pads 19 on wall 19'held in spaced relation by a flexible covering 19 inclosing said parts as well as the parts 20 and 21. At 29 are upturned relatively shallow ribs or flanges located at the outer ends 01 compartments 6, which may be formed from the material of webs 21 and located at the ends of the compartments at the open sides of the box, to serve as abutments to prevent the contents of the Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
compartments from slipping out laterally when the sides 2, 3 are opened. Said wall 19, webs 21, ends 22, ribs or flanges 23 are substantially the same as illustrated in my aforesaid application, except that the upturned portions22 in the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings provide end walls of the box on the edges of which the sides 2, 3, 4 are folded when the box is closed. The parts 19, 20, 21, and 23 may be stamped from a single piece of material and bent to shape. In the example illustrated the upturned end portions 22 are covered with pieces of material, such as leather 25, which may be glued thereto and stitched at 26 to the cover 6 along the edges at the bottom portion of said cover whereby the wall 19, webs 21 and upturned end portions 22 are secured to the bottom. The material 25 may be stitched along one edge at 26 to the material 6, whereupon the metal parts 19, 20, 21 and 22 will be placed upon the bottom portion 1, and then the material 25 will be folded over the end walls 22 and glued thereto to secure said metal parts in position.
In order to retain the side 3 in closed position, except when it is desired to insert the folded strop A into or remove it from compartment a, I provide a spring member 27 cooperative between the bottom 1 and side 3, which spring is shown in the form of a Wire having a laterally disposed loop-like portion 27* disposed between the stiffener 8 of the bottom and a stiffening strip 28 below wall 19 and webs 21, the portions 27* of said spring extending from the lateral portion 27 along the hinge portion 142 and bent at right angles to the ends of the hinge portion to extend along the outer edges of side 3 at 27, the portions 27 being located Within the adjacent folded portions 6 of the outer cover 6. Said spring member acts in a torsion-like manner to retain the side 3 closed against the end portions 22 and to permit said side to be opened out, the portion 27 being retained between the parts 8 and 28 to cause spring action for returning side 3 to closed position.
When it is desired to insert a folded strop within compartment (2 the side 2 or 3 will be opened to permit the strop to be pushed into such compartment. lVhen it is desired to remove the strop both of the sides 2, 3 may be opened out so that the finger of the user may. be pushed against one side of the strep through one open side of compartment a to permit the strep to be pushed through the other opened side of said compartment, such as illustrated in Fig. 2, whereby ready means are provided for removal of the strop.
y improvements are simple and cheap to manufacture, afford advantages in permitting ready access to the contents of the box, While providing a very convenient means to permit the insertion and removal of a folded razor strop, and enable making a box of the character described without first forming rigid structure having one side and a top hinged thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A box of the class described comprising a bottom, sides and a cover on one of the sides all hinged to swing relatively one to another, and a wall supported over the bottom and spaced therefrom providing a compartment therebetween open on opposite sides to be opened and closed by the first named sides to permit access to either side of the compartment for insertion and re moval of the contents.
2. A box of the class described comprising a bottom, sides and cover hinged together to swing relatively one to another, a wall supported over the bottom and spaced therefrom providing a compartment therebctween open on opposite sides to be opened and closed by the first named sides to permit access to either side of the compartment for insertion and removal of the contents, and a spring coiiperative between said bottom and one of said sides for normally closing the latter on one side of the compartment.
3. A box of the class described comprising a bottom, sides and cover hinged together to swing relatively one to another, a wall supported over the bottom and spaced therefrom providing a compartment therebctween open on opposite sides to be opened and closed by the first named sides to permit access to either side of the compartment for insertion and removal of the contents, and a spring comprising a wire having a laterally bent portion coiiperative with said bottom, a portion extending along the hinge between the bottom and one of the sides and a portion extending along the edge of said side for normally closing the latter against a side of said compartment.
4. A box comprising a piece of material having spaced stiffeners therealong providing hinge-like portions therebetwcen and forming the bottom, sides and cover, a wall supported over the bottom and spaced therefrom providing a compartment open on oposite sides to oppose the first named sides respectively, said wall having upturned end portions forn'iing the ends of the box against which said sides and cover are foldable.
A box comprising a piece of flexible material having a stiffening piece providing a bottom portion, stifiening pieces spaced therefrom providing side and cover poitions, end portions upon the bottom, a strip upon the bottom, and a spring cooperative with said strip and bottom and with one of said sides normally retaining the latter closed against the end portions.
.lUb
I ll) 6. A box comprising a piece of flexible material and a lining, the edges of said material being turned over and stitched through the lining, spaced stiffening pieces between said material and lining providing a bottom, sides and a cover, end portions upon the bottom, and a spring comprising a wire having a portion cooperative with the bottom and a portion embedded in the folded portion of said material of one of said sides adapted to normally retain said side against the end portions.
7. A box comprising a piece of flexible material and a lining secured thereto, spaced stiffening pieces between said material and lining providing a bottom, sides and cover, a Wall over and spaced from the bottom, end portions at right angles to the bottom and pieces 01' material secured at one end to the bottom and covering and secured to said end portions.
