UNITED- STATEEi PATENT WHEELER H. VIBBER, OF NEW LONDQN', CUHNECTICUT, .ASS IGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE GILLETTE-VIBBEB (10., NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, A. CORPORATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1921.
Application filed, December 2, 1919. serial no. 341,898.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l VHnnLnn H. Vienna, a citizen of the United States, residing at New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and usful improvement in Elbow-Fittings for Electric Installation; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-- Figure 1. A view in side elevation of an elbow-fitting for electric installation, embodying my invention and showing it as applied to two conduit-pipes.
Fig. 2. A View thereof in front elevation with a portion of its curved and flanged cover broken away.
Fig. 3. A view thereof in vertical central section showing one of its two conduit-pipes.
Fig. 4. A detached broken view in transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
My invention relates to an improved elbow-fitting for electric installation, the object being to produce at a low cost for manufacture a simple and effective fitting constructed with particular reference to compactness of form convenience in use and cheapness and room-economy in installation.
W'ith these ends in view my invention consists in a one-piece, quadrant-shaped boxlike body having its ends arranged at a substantially right angle to each other and each formed with an internally threaded integral collar and its sides and ends being adapted for the application of a cover. My invention further consists in an elbow-fitting having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a quadrant-shaped onepiece box-like body comprising parallel, triangular sides 5, 5 and ends 6, 6, the latter standing at a substantially right angle to each other and respectively formed with inwardly extending internally threaded collars 7 and 8 for the reception of the externally threaded ends of pipe-conduits 9 and 10. At their inner ends the said collars are turned inward to form stop-flanges 11 against which the ends of the pipes abut.
The outer edges of the said sides and ends 5 and 6 are bent outwardly at an angle or flared to form inclined seating-flanges 12 upon which flanges 13 corresponding to their inclination and width and formed upon the sides and ends of a longitudinally bowed cover 14, are drawn by means of screws 15 whereby the cover is firmly secured in place and water and dust excluded from the fitting.
By constructing the fitting as described, with inwardly extending integral, threaded collars for the reception of the threaded ends of the conduit-pipes, the fitting is not only made compact, attractive and workmanlike in appearance and the ends of the pipes protected, but it is in this way adapted to be abutted directly upon the walls or other surfaces adjacent to it, thus affecting an economy of room, whereas in the fittings of the prior art having outwardly extending collars, the same hold the fitting away from such surfaces unless special openings therein are provided for them which makes the installation expensive.
No claim is made in this application for an elbow-fitting characterized by a later ally open frame or body consisting of two plate-like arms standing at substantially a right angle to each other and each formed with an integral, internally threaded, pipereceiving collar, in combination with a hood to inclose the space between the arms, and means for securing the hood thereto, such subject matter having been claimed in applicants co-pending application, No. 341,897, filed De ember 2d, 1919.
I claim:
1. An elbow-fitting for electric installation, comprising a quadrant-shaped body having integral sides and ends, the former being parallel and the latter standing at substantially a right angle to each other and respectively provided with integral, internally threaded, pipe-receiving collars, in combination with a cover, and means for se curing the same in place.
2. An elbow-fitting for electric installation, comprising a quadrant-shaped body having integral sides and ends, of which the former are parallel with each other and of which the latter stand at substantially a right angle with. respect to each, other and In testimony whereof, have signed this are respectively provided With integral, inspecification in the presence of two sub- 10 ternally threaded, pipe-receiving collars, scribing Witnesses.
and the said ends and sides having their outer'edges flared to form seats, in combi- WHEELER VIBBER nation With a bowed cover. having flared Witnesses:
side edges and ends adapted to bear upon FREDERIC C. EARLE,
the said seats of the body. J. HAROLD FLYNN.
