UNITED stares rarrnr OFFICE.
GRACE C. HARRIS, 01E MONTERE'Y, CALIFORNIA.
CHILD-HOLDER ATTAGI-II-JIENT FOR AUTOS.
Application filed June 19, 1919.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, (limos C. HARRIS, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Monterey, in the county of Monterey and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Child-Holder Attachments for Autos, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in baby holders, and more particularly relates to a child holder for attachment to autos.
The invention has for its principal aim and object to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed so as to accommodate one or more babies or children and in. turn be connected within the rear part of the front seat or" the motor vehicle so as to retain the children and avoid the necessity of bestowing continual attention on the children.
It is an equally important object oi the present invention to provide a holder in the form ot-a bag or sack which is capable of being adjusted horizontally and vertically to properly accommodate one or more children, while means are also employed for disposition about the children and engagement with the saclr for maintaining the child or children in a substantially upright form, even though they fall asleep.
As a more specific object the present invention contemplates the provision of improved cooperative means on the sack or bag for removably and adjustably maintaining the sack in predetermined positions of adjustment; and to improve the construction of the sack.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a View to compactness, and in which the number oi parts are few, the construction simple and the cost of production low and the eiiiciency high. A
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, and the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and sat-' isfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without depart- Specification of Letters Patent.

ingirom the principle of operation of the various parts.
T he invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z nigure l is a the device applied.
F1g.'2 is a perspective looking at the rear of Fig. 1.
liig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
l 1g. 1- is a longitudinal sectional detail of the or sac g g. 5 a vertical sectional detail thereof.
.11 1g. 6 is an end elevation of the improved bady holder.
i* 1g. is a detail of the hanger strap.
slll'lllttl characters oi reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Retermng now, more particularly, to the accoin i Sat 0 S iil l dltl itie liii l pmlvlleda g i r mm a single piece of suitable cloth which is folded upon itself and has its side edges secured to ether by stitches 2 in such manner that till; rear portion is longer than the front portion, providing an extension Another row of stitches 4': is provided in spaced relation to the stitches E2 so r to provide side easements o in which are disposed adjusting strips 6, the lower ends oi. which are anchored as at i at the lower ends of the casing. These straps are provided with eyelets 8 and carry rings 9 at their outer ends, while engageable with the rings or an i of the eyelets is a snap hook 10 which is connected to another strap 11 in turn secured as at 12 to the onposite or rear portion of the body or bag. By the provision of these straps d and fasteners 9 it is apparent that the height of the bag may be adjusted to accommodate various sized children.
in order to adjust the width of the bag to accommodate one or more children, as desired, the upper edge of the front 01" the bag is folded inwardly'and secured by stitches 13 to provide a casement 14, in which is mounted another strap 16, the intermediate portion of which is secured by a suitable fastener 17, while the respective end portions carry eyelets 18, and rings 19 at the terminals thereof. Other straps 20 are connected rigidly as at 21 to the upper edges near the sides oi the bag and these straps carry snap fasteners 22 designed to be engaged with either the rings 19 or any of the eyelets 18.
in connecting the device in position, straps perspective View showing 23 and 24 and straps 25 and 26 are secured as at 27 to the upper edges of the extension 3, while the straps 23 and 25 carry buckles 28 for engagement respectively with the straps 2a and 26 subsequent to the passing of thestraps about the handle bar 29 on the back of the front seat 30 of the motor vehicle 31, supporting the bag in the front of the front seat.
A pocket generally designated by the nu meral is secured to the front face of the extension 3 and accommodates a padding material or a pillow 33 which is removably maintained in position by means of a flap 3st detachably engageable, as at 35, with a pocket for covering the same.
In order that children may be held in a substantially upright position in the sack and even when they fallasleep, body engaging straps 36 are employed for disposition about the body of the child beneath the arms, one at the terminals ol? the strap carrying a buckle 37 for engagement with the opposite terminal. A. tab projects from the medial portion oi? each strap 26 and carries an engaging loop 39 designed for engagement with any one of the buttons l-O carried by a flexible strap ell and in turn secured to the upper edge of the extension on the front face thereof, as indicated inthe drawings. To afford the children amusement when in the bag, a pocket ll) is connected to the outer face of the front of the bag and is adapted to receive cakes, toys, et cetera, which are prevented trom displacement by a tlap ll.
7 It is thought in View of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the at'wantages 01'". the invention will be readily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and iii-any apparently widely diil'erent embodiments of this invention could be made without depapting from the scope thereof it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. it is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements ol the scope oi the invention which as a matter oi? language might be said to fall therebetween.
What is claimed is A device of the character described including a bag having easements formed at tile sides thereof and a casement at the top of the front, straps anchored at the bottom of the side easements and having eyelets in llldil' outer portions, snap hooks flexibly connected to the top of the bag at the sides thereof and engageable with any of the eyelets in the straps for varying the height of the bag, another strap disposed in the top casen'ient and having eyelets in its projecting end portions, other snap hooks flexibly connected to the top of the bag and at the sides thereof and engageable with any of the eyelets in the extending portions of the last mentioned strap for varying the width 01'." the bag', and means for attaching the bag.
in testimony whereof I afiix my si nature.
