Be it known that I, RICHARD M. STEPHENS, of Glen Ellen, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, whereof the following-is a specification.
This invention relates to electric water heaters, and is intended to heat small bodies of water, such as a cupful, `or a small pailful, &c. The object of theinvention is to produce such a heater which shall bev cheap to construct,and durable and efectivein use.
The invention comprises a heating member composed of' an outer protective shell, with a cap and handle at one end thereof, and Within the outer shell, va hollow cylinder of chemically inert material, andpreferably of low electricconductivity, such as graphitic carbon, and within this hollow cylinder, a second hollow cylinder of similar material. Both carbon cylinders and the outer protective shell are perforated at intervals to permit the circulation of water through and about them, and the inner carbon rcylinder is open at the `bottom for the same purpose. The two carbon cylinders are connected with the two poles of an electric circuit, so that when the instrument is plunged into water, a current will flow, and the water which circulated through the instrument will be heated. j

Referring'to the' drawing, 1 representsthe outer,. or protective shel which may be made of tin, or any other material which it is convenient to use. This outer vshell is perforated .at intervals with holes 2, vopenmg into its interior. Inside the shell 1 is a carbon shell or hollowcylin'derB, which is also piercedwith holes 4, opening into its interior. "Within the cylinder 3, is a second hollow cylinder 5, also pierced with holes 6, opening 1nto"-its interior. The two cylinders are spaced from each other, and from the outer shell, by rings 11 of rubber or other non-conducting material. The bottom of the inner carbon cylinder is open. The cylinders 3 and 5 are connected at the top with the two strands of a lamp cord, or other electric conductor, as seen at 10.
