IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification `forming part ofLet-ters Patent No. 136,655., dated March l1, 1873.
To'll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON K. KLrNE, of Readington, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupling, of which the following is a specification: y v
The invention is an improvement on' my patent granted March 5, 1872 and consists in cutting away the rear wall and forming a backwardly-inclined plane to receive and conveniently hold the coupler.
Figure lis alongitudinal sectional elevation of the draw-heads of a couple of cars constructed according to my invention. It also represents the coupling-rod in side elevation, and in the position it occupies when the cars are coupled. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of one of the draw-heads, and side elevation of the coupling-rod Aas in its adjustment for self-couplin g. It also shows the coupling-rod in dotted lines in the cavity behind the coupling-shoulders when the cars arefgnot coupled.

A `epresents the draw-head with the threesided opening in the end toadmit the end of th'e headed coupling-rod D, which is forced up the sides and passes into the cavity F behind the shoulders E, to beengaged by them when the part ofthe rod which joins the head falls in the narrow space between the walls O and rests upon the upper end of the bottom wall B. G is a notch in the back wall of the cavity F at the bottom, to receive the projection 'H of the coupling-rod to hold the latter, as represented in Fig. 3, for coupling self-actingly. Heretofore the back wall of the cavity F has extended directly upward tothe top of the draw-head, so that when the cars stood so that the buffers touched, with the projections H both under the overhangingv walls of the notches G, the rod could not be lifted out without moving the ears apart; because after lifting one end above the corner a of the said overhanging wall of one of the draw-heads, the rod being short enough for one end to pass out of its notch, the wall above would prevent the endwise movement of the coupling-rod necessary for the other end to be withdrawn from its notch G. I therefore construct-these buffers without this vertical wall, except for a very short distance above the notch G, to allow of the necessary end movement, so that I can uncouple the cars readily when standingtogether; and Iprolong the upper portion of the cavity F about the length of the coupling-rod, arranging the bottom K and deepening` said cavity at L, so that the rod may be laid on said bottom with one head overhanging part L and the other the front part F of the cavity when the cars are nncoupled and b e retained securely until w anted for coupling again. Y
By these improvements this coupling may be used for coal-cars, which, standing together in long trains, awaiting their turn for being brought tothe dumpingplace, sometimes require to be uncoupled withoutbein g separated;
and they also require to have the connectingrodsadjusted for coupling self-actingly when separated, and before coming together, which this contrivance is particularly adapted for.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A draw-head having rear piece K backwardly-inclin'ed on its top surface to receive and hold the coupling-rod when not in use.
AARON K. KLINE.
