HAND-OPERATED PRESS.

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BRITTAIN, a citizen or" the United States, and a resident of Haverhill, county ofEssex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Hand-0perated Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand operated presses, especially adapted for bench use and more particularly-to certain improvements on the form of press disclosed in my pending application Serial No. 163407, in which an operating lever is mounted to slide on the arms of a fiat-sided U-shaped strap and is frictionallylocked thereto in any position by dogs, so that stacks of soles of various heights may be placed between the arms of the strap and the lever may beadjusted thereon, according to the height of the stack, and then looked, thereby enabling a strong pressure to be secured, although the extent of the compression may be small.
The invention further relates to a modification or special adaptation of the invention disclosed in my application Serial No. 23057 8, wherein the operation of these cam dogs may be simultaneously controlled both automatically and by hand.
The object of the present invention is to provide a small hand-operated press of the above described type which is adapted to be manually controlled, so that the operating lever may be readily locked to the arms of the U-shaped strap employed in connection therewith, and as readily unlocked therefrom, thereby enabling the device to be operated with facility and ahand press, of this character, to be produced at small expense. comprises a base board 2, about which a U-shaped strap of flat strip metal extends, the arms of which extend in approximate parallelism. A pair of U-shaped clips 6 are mounted to slide on the inner or adjacent sides and the edges or" said arms and are connected bya pivot shaft, 8, on which an operating lever 10, having a cylindricallv shaped head is eccentrically fulcrumed and from which the upper press member 12 is loosely suspended. Cam levers or dogs14 are pivoted in and between the ears of the clips 6, to swing in the plane of said strap arms, and are arranged so that when their handles are thrown upwardly their cam faces Wlll frlctionally engage the outer or opposite sides of the straps with increasing :torce, so as to lock the clips against upward movement thereon.
As thus far described the device is substantially identical to the device of my said prior application No. 163407. According to the present invention, a right-angular shaped bracket 16 is rigidly secured to the front side of each clip, and an arm 18 is pivotally con- .ected, in axial alinement to each bracket 16, by a bolt 20, said arms being arranged to extend rearwardly over the handle portions of said cam dogs, and the rear ends thereof being rigidly connected by a cross bar 22, preferably formed continuously therewith. An arm 24 is also similarly mounted on each bolt 20 and extends obliquely downwardand rearward beneath the handle portions of the corresponding cam dog, and each arm 24 is held in a fixed position with relation to the adjacent arm 18 by abrace bar 26, which is integrally connected to the end of the corresponding arm 24 and extends upwardly therefrom in the rear of the cam dog handleportion, at a sharp angle and is connected to the arm 18 near its free end by a bolt 28, thereby providing, in effect, an arm having a triangular shaped aperture, through which said handle portionloosely extends.
Y Vith the above described construction, the
arrangement is such that when the bar 22 is pushed down, so that all the parts connected thereto swing on the pivots 20, the arms 18 will engage the upper sides of the handle portions of thecam do s 14 and swing them downwardly, so as to disengage them simultaneously from the strap arms 4 and permit the clips 6, and parts which they support, to slide freely up or down on said strap arms.
Also, when the bar is pulled upward, the arms 4; will engage the under sides of said handle portions and swing them upwardly, so that said dogs will be simultaneously forced into frictional en agement with said strap arms, to lock the clips 6 thereto. V
The braces 26 act to cooperate with the arms 18 to limit the downward swinging movement of the bar 22, so as to prevent movement in this direction to an extent sufficient to move said dogs lto a position in which they would not be engaged by the arm sections 24, when the bar is swung up. That is, the arrangement is such that said handle portions become bound between the arms 18 and braces 26, when these parts have been pushed down to a certain extent, as indicated in Fig 6. lVhen the parts have been moved down to this extent, the braces 26 also have a preliminary lifting action on the dogs 14, when the bar 22 is swung up.
The manner of using the device is similar to that described in connection with the device of my pending application gerial No. 230,578, that is ;the bar 22 is pushed down to permit ready adjustment of the operating lever 10 to any elevation, according to the height of the stack of soles to be compressed, and then the bar is pulled upwardly to lock the lever to the straps arms so that, when the lever is operated, the full pressure desired will be applied to the stack. In practice the operator usually operates the lever 10 with one hand, so that the frictional engagement of the cam dogs may be readily controlled, under all conditions of use, permitting the press to be operated with the utmost facility under all the varying conditions of use for which it is adapted. The construction is also simple and such that the device may be manufactured at small e3:- pense.
I claim 1. A press comprising a stationarymemher having a pair of standards formed to provide parallel faces at their adjacent and opposite sides, a movable member, a support slidably mounted on-said standards and havlock said support thereto, arms pivotally mounted on said support and extending in transverse relation to said levers in position to engage the same and means connecting said arms to cause the same to swlng m unison and simultaneously control the positions so 'of said cam dogs; r

A press comprising a stationary member having a pair of standards formed to provide parallel faces at thelr ad acent and opposite sides, a movable member, a support mg mechanism for forcing said members toslidably mounted on said standards and having mechanism for forcing said members together, a pair of cam dogs pivoted on said support and arranged to swing, in the plane of said standards, into frictional engagement with the opposite faces of said standards, to lock said-support thereto, two pairs of arms pivotally mounted on said support to swing about an axis disposed parallel to and at one side of said plane, said arms being arranged to extend one above and one beneath the corresponding handle portions of said dogs and a rigid connection between each pair of arms to cause simultaneously motion thereof, and corresponding control of said cam dogs.

A press comprising a stationary member having a pair of standards formed to provide parallel faces at their adjacent and opposite sides, a movable member, a support slidably mounted on said standards and hav ing mechanism for forcing said inembers together, a pair of cam dogs pivoted on said support and arranged to swing, in the plane of said standards, into frictional engagement with the opposite faces of said standards, a pair of arms pivotally mounted on said support to swing about an axis disposed parallel to and in front of the plane of movement of said dogs, each arm being formed to provide an opening adapted arranged to receive the handle portions of said dogs, respectively, to cause corresponding up and down swinging movement thereof, said aperture being of a size relative to said handle por tions, to cause the latter to bind therein to limit the swinging movement of said arms and means connecting said arms and movable to cause simultaneous locking and unlocking movements of said levers.
