Description

L. ATWOOD.
WOVEN HOSE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 22, I919- 1,365,809. Patented Jam 18,1921.
Iii/176171567, Leon aa'dflfwood UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEO NARD AT'WIOOD, OF BOSTON, MASSACKUSETIiEi.
wovniv HOSE.
Application filed November 22, 1919. Serial No; 339,810.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD A'rwooo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident. of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Com- -monwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woven Hose, of which the following is a full, clear and exact s ecification,
The object of this invention is the construction of a wire-wound hose wherein the wire shall be inca able of separation from and of shifting with respect to the rubber and fabric composing the remainder of the hose. In the case of wire-strengthened woven hose previously in use, any bending thereof will so displace the helically disposed wire as to cause the latter to remain permanently displaced and to thereby badly affect the hose both as a matter of appearance and of utility.
To accomplish this I provide a strand for helical application to the hose being woven, which strand iscomposed of a plurality of wires, preferably two, so intertwined with fibrous material as practically to conceal the wires. When this strand is woven Into the hose and treated with rubber solution these fibers will so strongly anchor the wires 1n place that no amount of bending and twisting of the hose can displace the same.
In the drawings forming art of this specification, Figure 1 is a si e View of a section of hose embodying my improvement.
- Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a part thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a length of the compositc strand used in the manufacture of the hose. Fig. 4 is an exaggerated view of a pair of wires twisted to other and having a part thereof supplied with fibrous material.
As shown in Fig. 4, the two or more strands of wire 1 are twisted together with fibrous material 2 gripped thereby and appearing substantially as illustrated in Fig, 3.
The hose is woven in substantially the custonlary manner, the warp 3 extendlng longitudinally, and the composite strand 1, 2 is. the weft or filling, as shown at the left hand part of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2. After the weaving. a coating of rubber 4 is applied, as indicated in Fig. 1, in a well known manner, and then vulcanized. This rubber thoroughly embeds itself in the inter-fiber spaces,
so that after vulcanization it is impossible for the wires 1 to detach themselves from the warp .or the rubber coating.
At the same time, the wire helix within the hose greatly strengthens it against either bursting because ofexcessive inner pressure, or of belng crushed by external compression.
This hose can be coated or impregnated by rubber in a well known manner, or by means of the mechanism set forth in my companion applications Serial Nos. 308,625 and 308,626.
What I claim is:
1. A fabric having warp and Weft, the weft being composed of a strand of wire and fiber; secured together.
2. A fabric having warp and weft, the weft bein composedof a plurality of wires havlng fi er secured thereto.
3. A fabric havingwarp and weft, the weft being composed of a pluralityof wires twisted together and of fibers secured thereto.
4. .A fabric having warp and weft one of which is composedmof fiber and a plurality of wires twisted together to attach said fiber thereto.
5. A hose having a composite helix about it, the helix comprising fibers and a plurality of wires twisted together to attach said fibers thereto.
6. A hose having a composite helix about it, comprising fibers and a plurality of wires twisted together to attach said fibers thereto, and a' rubber coating engaging saidwire and fiber,
7. A hose woven with a warp and weft, the weft comprising a plurality of wires twistedtogether and fibers confined thereto, and a rubber coating incorporated therewith.
8. A hose woven with a warp and weft, the weft comprising two wires twisted together and fibers attached thereto by the clamping action of the twisted surfaces. and a rubber coating incorporated therewlth In testimony that I claim the'foregolng invention, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of November,'191-9.
