Description

` To all whom it mag/"Gomera:-
NUNITED lSTATES PATENT oFFl-ce.
mmm TYREE, or NEWORK, Nj. y.
Be it known that I, HiRA-M TYREE, a citii zen of the United States, and residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tombstones, of which the followin is a specification.
y invention relates to tombstones of`al ictile material, preferably a vitreous mate- The wall 9 of the base 8 opposite one face rial, .and one object of my invention is to provide a tombstone which, while it may be of such material as is substantially indestructible by the elements and hence as im- `perishable as may be, is so constructed as to be readily assembled and placed, and
firmly retained in the earth. Other objects of my invention will appear as my inven` tion is understood. I l
Speaking generally,v my invention from its broader aspect comprises two sections of fictile material, one a memorial section hav-,
` ing a horizontal part, and the other an earth engaging section engaging with said horizontal part through which it may be readily aiiixed to the memorial section by means of a key. Preferably the key is so constructed or So covered as to be substantially ,unaffect- "ed by long exposure to the weather.
In the accompanying drawing and the following description, I have illustrated and described in some detail thebest embodiments of my invention of which T am now aware. Figure 1 vis a perspective view,
partly in section, of the preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section through a part thereof showing the same embedded in-the earth. Fig.- 3 is a perspective-view of parts of another form of my invention. Fig. l is a section thereof showing this form embedded in the earth. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of still a third form of my invention. Figs and 7- are sectional views showing diferent forms of keys, such as may be used with my invention.
In the embodiment lof my inventionshown in Figs. 1 and 2, there is a vertical memorial section 1 suitable for receiving the linscription, etc. This memorial section is provided. with a horizontal part 2l integral therewith. This section 1 2. is 'of a vitreous material, preferably a lplastic' glass, and embedded therein is a suitable reinforcement 3, in the instance illustrated woven wire, which eX- 5 tends throughrboth the memorial part` and the horizontal part of section 1--2 as apspecineatiqn qf 'Letters Patent. Patented Jan, 11, y1921, application mea `Juiy i2, 191e. seriai in.` 310,363.
pears from Fig. 2. A countersunk vertical a boxlikestructure open'at the bottom and like the memorial section is'fof' a .vitreous material, preferably plastic glass.` It is pro'` vided with` suitable reinforcement, such as Woven wire, disposed in its sides and top.
of the memorial vsection is inclined at its memorial section and horizontal part 2 'thereof are dovetailed ina slot in the top `8. The exposed surface of the bolt is then covered with the same or anyother suitable imperishable material 14C, for example lead, whereby a key is provided joining the horil.
zontal part and the base, the exposed surface or surfaces ofy which arel such as'to be unaffected by the weather throughout lon exposure to the elements. The base 8 an possibly more or less of the memorial section y1-2 being buried in the earth, the
tombstone, on account of the nature of the base and the connection between the two parts, is firmly and quite permanently placed.
In the embodiment of my invention of Figs; 3 and 4 there is again the memorial section l-1 provided with a horizontal section 2 integral therewith, -both of a reinforced vitreous material. The earth engaging section, however, comprises a' horizontal bar 18. The bar. 1,8 is placed on the upper surface of the horizontal part 2 and this bar 18 andkpart 2 are provided with coperating passages for receiving the screw threaded,
lower end away from the opposite side of Y the base as shown` in Figs. 1 and 2. The
ico
reinforced, i'ictile screw 19- (better shown in Fig. 4;) whereby the memorial section 1 and the earth engaging section 18 are firmly auf` permanently xed together. This device ifl designed to be buried in the earth until tir `upper surface of the section 18 is iii,
I tion.
partly traverses the earth engaging member a reinforced vitreous material.
stantiallyat the .level of the earth as shown in Fig. 4.
' In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and ,6, the memrial section 1 again has the horizontal section 2 integral therewith, both being of bedded in the section 21 and projects through the center of the truncated conical part 23. In the assembly of sections l and 21, the section l, including its horizontal part 2, are set down in the recess.. 22 with the horizontal part 2 inclosing the conical art 23. After the two sections have been gether by the nut and washer on the bolt 24 as shown, the remainder of the passage in the horizontal part 2 is filled with any suitable material, forv example lead, which is unaffected b the weather even after long exposure. s inthe case of the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2, this additional material prevents the destruction of the metal bolt 24 byy the elements.
In Fig. 7, I have shown `a slightly modified form of the key connection which may be employed with substantially any one of the before described embodiments of my inven- In this form the key passage only 27 it does not pass completely therethrough.'
The key re-` Xed toy The headed boit 2 8 is located partly in this recess in section 27 and partly in the passage in the horizontal part 2. The space outside -the bolt and below its head'is then filled with'A y any suitable material 29, thereafter the threaded nut and washer are applied and the remainder of the passage in horizontal part 2 islled with any suitable weather resisting material as before indicated.
While I have thus l.illustrated and de-4` scribed the best embodiments` of my. invention of which I am now aware, it will be understood that my invention is not limited to these embodiments but that these embodiments are merely illustrative of my inven-\ tion.- My invention which I desire to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the following claims: y
l. VA tombstone comprising a. fictile memorial section, a separate enlarged base or earth section, and a key, a lor. er `integral part ofthe memorial section projecting horizontally therefrom in engagement vwith said base section and said key fastening said horizontal part to the base section, the exposed surface of the key being protected from the weather.
2. A tombstone comprising a vitreous memorial section, a vitreous base section, and aukey, the base section comprising an open boX- ikestructure having a closed top dovetailed into the memorial section and the key passing vertically through a horizontally projecting integralpart of the memorial section and into thebase to fasten the two sections together.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
HIRAM TYREE.
