Reference is now, had to the drawingsin which the tie is illustrated as comprising an elongated flat metal plate 1, Whosefcentral portion 2 is arched to give the tie a sllghtv movement when it is subjected to extreme strain. Removably received in each box 5 is a rail supporting and cushioning block 9Which is preferably though not necessarily formed of Wood. The block 9 is of a size to fit snugly in the box, and to extend'slightly above the upper edge of the box side Walls, so that a rail supported on the block will not touch the metal box, but Will be cushioned on the block as shown in Fig. l. The block 9 is insertible into the box Jfrom the Open inner end and has a portion cut aivay so that it Will snugly lit under the flange 8 at the outer upper end of the box.
A reliable fastening means for each block is provided by taking a metal bar 13 and bending its side edges down to form biting flanges 14 and forming bolt holes adjacent the ends of said bar. The bar-is disposed adjacent the inner end of the block with itsL flanges lcontacting the block and bolts 15 are then passed through said bolt holes and through suitable openings in the base plate. As shown, the lower ends of the bolts are bent and the upper ends are vthreaded to receive nuts which are tightened to Jforce the biting edges of the bars into the Wooden block.
Rails R Will be secured to the blocks by astening'plates 16, each of which is substantially L-shaped, one arm 17 of the plate being slit longitudinally to a point substantially midway the length of the arm. I claim: 1.-'A tie comprising a base plate arched midway its length and having iat end portions, a pair of boxes vsecured on said flat end portions, said boxes having open inner ends and tops, a pair of rail supporting cushion blocks in said boxes, a pair of cross bars en` raging the upper faces of said blocks, and bolts passing through the end portions of said bars and the base plate to secure the blocks in position.

Aftie comprising a base plate arched midway its length and having Hat end portions, said end portions each having a vertically extending opening therein, a box disposed on each flat end portion, each box having an open inner end and top, a depending lu on each box for snug engagement in one o the openings, rivets connecting the boxes and fiat end portions, a pair of rail supporting cushion blocks in said boxes, and means for securing the blocks in said boxes.
3. A'tie comprising a base plate arched midway its length and having flat end portions, a pair of boxes having open inner ends and tops, said boxes being` secured on the.
flat end portions, a pair of tie rods connecting said boxes, a pair of rail supporting cushion blocks in said boxes, means for securing said blocks in the boxes, and means for connecting rails with the blocks.
