l CONTAINER AND PROTECTOR Fon aoLL-RooFING.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J an. 11, 1921.
Application filed April 1, 1918. Serial No. 226,080.
To all whom t may conce-m.'
Be it known that l, RAYMoNn F. HoLwAY. a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California` have invented neuv and useful Improvements in Containers and Protectors f'or Roll-Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a container and protectorl for roll roofing which is composed of sheets of resistant, uaterproof. flexible material, adapted to be laid upon a roof with the meeting edges ot the sheets connected together to form a continuous protective covering. These sheets are made of' an approved length and width and are rolled for transportation and delivery. Tn order to protect the edges of the rolls from being bruised and damaged, and to inclose in each roll the means for securing and connecting them together in a complete sheet, an inclosing tube is inserted into the interior of each roll, having protective flanges at the ends and separating flanged disks inserted to form pocketsin which the cement containers, nails, and other requisites may be separately contained and protected.
The invention consists in details ot construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, 1n Which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section ot aroll and container.
Fig. 2 is an exterior view.
Fig. 3 is a section showing the flanged interior disks.
As shown in the drawings, A is a roll ot material suitable for roofing purposes, and having a central, tubular space adapted to contain the herein described structure and the necessary accessories, so that when it reaches the place ot use, it contains everything necessary for assemblingany number of sheets to complete a roof.
In order to protect the rolls, and especially the ends which, when unrolled, com prise the meeting edges ot' the sheets, flanges 2 are made to cover these ends. These flanges are secured to the ends of tubes 3 and 44l, which fit Within the roll and mayv telescope together so as to adjust themselves to the length of the roll and bring the protective flanges 2 into contact with the roll ends. The outer ends of: the tubes are turned outwardly or otherwise formed with disk flanges 2. A hollow cup-shaped cushion member 5 extends from the disk flange 5a into the end of the contiguous tube and forms a cushion and seat against which a can of sheet uniting cement rests. Against the opposite end of this can rests the bottom 7 of the cup-shaped receptacle 7a and opposed to this cup is another cup 8, the edgesA of the two meeting and completing the receptacle for nails or other fastenings. Another cup-shaped member 9 is fitted into the tube with its bottom contacting with the bottom 8, and its open opposite end facing or in contact with the inner end of the opposite tube, so that the telescoping adjustment of the tubes to fit the length of the roll may position and retain the receptacles and prevent undue movement during transportation. The parts may be retained in final adjustment by any suitable adhesive cement and the ends may be further protected by caps l1.
By thus constructing and assembling the parts everything necessary is compactly contained and protected in readiness for immediate use and the cost is greatly reduced. It should be understood that the container may be placed in either end of the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A roof roll container and protector comprising telescopic tubes adjustable Within the roll, a flange formed at the outer end of one of the tubes -for engagement with an end of the roll, means carried by the other tube for engagement with the opposite end of said roll, and retaining means on each end of the roll to abut and protect the ends of the roll.
2. A roof roll container and protector comprising telescopic tubes adjustable Within the roll, a flange formed at the outer end of one of the tubes for engagement with an end of the roll, means carried by the other tube for engagement with the opposite end of said roll, retaining means on each end of the roll to abut and protect the ends of the roll, and a disk abutting said flange and inclosed by the retaining means.
3. A carrier and protector for rooting rolls consisting of tubular cylinders, one adapted to telescope Within the other, a flange at the outer end of the larger cylinder to contact with and protect the contiguous end of the roll, a hollow cup With a cushion bottom extending into the smaller cylinder and having. a ange at its outer end fitting against the outer end of the smaller cylinder7 and a disk for each end of said container, one abutting the flange of the cap and the other the flange of the cylinder. o
4. A carrier and protector for roong rolls consisting of tubular cylinders, one adapted to telescope within the other, a flange at the outer end of the larger cylinder to contact with and protect the contiguous end of the roll, a hollov cup with a cushion bottom extending into the smaller cylinder and having a flange at its outer end fitting against the outer end of the smaller cylinder, a disk for each end of said container, one abutting the fla-nge of the' cap and the other the flange of the cylinder, and elastic bottomed containers abutting each other Within the cylinders.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. i
