PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM HENRY WEBER, OF KOKOMO, INDIANA.
ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11; 1921.
Application filed June 21, 1920. Serial No. 390,497.
To aZZwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY IVEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Chairs and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a head rest attachment for chairs and similar structures, one of "its objects being to provide a simple form of attachment which can be applied readily to the back or other convenient portion of a chair or the like without requiring the use of special tools, said attachment including a head rest provided with adjustable connections whereby said head rest can be brought to any desired position relative to the user so as to afford the greatest comfort.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a chair having the present improvements combined therewith.
Fig. 2 is a view showing a portion of the attachment applied to a round portion of a chair.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line 33, Fig. 1.
F Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on line l-4:,
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a clamp having an angular jaw 2 at one end provided with a covering or pad 3 of suitable soft material. A screw 1 extends through the other end portion of the clamp and has a clamping button 5 swiveled thereon and also provided with a covering 6 of soft material. As shown in Fig. 1 the jaw 2 and button 5 can cooperate to clamp upon opposed flat faces of a portion of a chair back or the like indicated at B or, if necessary, the same clamp will efliciently grip a rounded portion of a chair back as shown at B in Fig. 2, this rounded portion extending into the angle of the jaw 2 and between said jaw and the button 5 so as to be properly held.
Formed on the outer side of the clamp 1 1S an arcuate guide 7 having a longitudinal slot 8, this guide being preferably arranged obliquely on the side of the clamp, as shown.
A clamping screw 9 is loosely mounted at one end in an opening 10 formed in the side of the clamp 1 and the threaded end portion of this screw is adjustably mounted in the slot 8, this screw is adapted to extend through the terminal portions 11 of a clip 12 and extending through the clip is one end portion of a spring rod 13. By tightenmg a wing nut 14 on the screw 9 the terminals 11 of the clip will be drawn together so as to bind the clip firmly upon the rod 13. At the same time the clip will be bound agalnst the arcuate guide strip 7 and thus held on said strip at any point to which it might be adjusted.
The spring rod 13 is preferably formed with an intermediate coil 15 and that end of the rod remote from the clip 12 is bent laterally and terminates in a ball 16. The head rest or pad 17 is provided, on its back, with a clamping plate 18 secured in any desired manner to the head rest and provided with a recess or opening 19 into which the ball 16 projects. Another clamping plate 20 has a central opening 21 in which the ball 16 is seated and this plate 20 is hold to the plate 18 by a screw 22 and by a bolt 23. A nut 24 is mounted on the bolt and by means thereof and of the screw 22, the ball 16 can be clamped firmly between the plates 18 and 20, thus to provide a universal connection between the head rest and the rod 13 whereby said head rest can be adjusted to any desired angle relative to the rod.
Obviously by providing the various adjustments herein described the head rest can, after being connected to the back of a chair or to any other supporting structure, be adjusted along the guide strip '7, about the longitudinal axis of the bolt 9, longitudinally of the rod 13, about the axis of said rod, and to any desired position on the ball 16. Thus the head rest can be easily brought to any point desired in order to afford the greatest possible comfort to the user.
If the device herein described is to be used in connection with chairs that are upholsteredor that have no exposed arms or cross pieces, the clamping members can be modified to any desired extent so as to adapt the device for proper gripping chairs of the tvpe mentioned.
What is claimed is:
1. An attachment for chairs and the like, including a supporting engaging clamp, a clip angularly adjustable upon the clamp, a resilient member engaged by the clip,- a single means for fastening the clip in adjusted position and to the resilient member, and a head rest adjustably mounted on the resilient member.
2. An attachment of the class described including a support engaging clamp, an angularly adjustable clip mounted on the clamp, a resilient member extending through the clip, a single means for binding the clip upon said member and for holding the clip in adjusted position upon the clamp, a head rest, a universal connection between the head rest and the resilient member, and means for holding the head rest against movement relative to said member.
3. An attachment of the class described including a support engaging clamp, an arcuate guide thereon, a clip adjustable along the guide and a resilient rod extending into and adjustable Within the clip, a single means extending from the clamp and engaging the clip and guide for binding the clip upon the rod and for securing said clip in adjusted position on the guide, a head rest, and a universal connection between the head rest and the rod.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WVILLIAM HENRY lVEBER.
