To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS JACKSON, a subject of the Kin of England, and residing atLewisham, ondon, S. E. 1 England, have invented Improvements in Hair and Skin Treatment Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to apparatus for treating or operating upon the hair and applying to it a liquid-body or medium, the liquid being contained in a container connected with the handle.

The liquid to be applied to the hair may be for cleansing purposes, or hospital nse, or nursery use, or for conditioning, coloring, or applying any medium to the hair.

In the apparatus or article according to this invention, the operating handle which carries the other parts of the apparatus, is disposed at right angles to the teeth and pad; and the pad holder is of box llke form; and one edge of the pad bears upon the teeth of comb device, and the handle is provided with a liquid container or reservoir, preferably by making it hollow; and it supplies the liquid to the pad at the opposite side to that which lies in contact with the teeth. Between the liquid containing handle or reservoir, and the pad, there is used a tap or liquid medlunr supply regulating device, by which the supply to the pad is controlled. In some cases the container may be separated from, but connected to and carried by the handle in a suitable way.

The invention is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings which are respectively a part sectional elevation, and end view, showing one modification, and Figs. 3 and 4 part sectional side elevation, and end view showing another modification; while Fig. 5 shows a modified form of comb device and holder.

In the drawings, 1 is the pad, 2 the pad holder, and 3 the comb or toothed device.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pad holder 2 is in the form of a trough, open along its front edge, and at the ends; and along the front edge of the pad, and lying in contact with it, 1s the comb device 3, which in the case shown has its teeth inclined inward toward the handle of the appliance, and projecting some distance below the lower surface of the pad and trough; the teeth of the comb in th1s case being coarse.

The head of the comb fits into a deep metal continuous clip holder 4: on the upper portion of the pad holder trough 2; and 1t may be held in place in the holder by the friction of the holder upon the comb head, or by projections on the inside of the holder fitting into recesses in the comb head, or by pins, orother means. Or, again, the comb may be held in position in the trough holder the holder beingchanneled on the underside in the'manner shown in Fig. 5, the comb having a ridge or projection upon it fitting in the channel, in which case the comb would be placed inposition, and removed, by sliding it in and out of the holder T from-the end, that is lengthwise.

In addition to the holding of the comb or device in its holder by the mode shown in Fig. 5, the mode of introducing into position in the holder from the ends is easier and better.

The pad and comb portion of the device is held and manipulated b a handle 5, which in the case shown in igs. 1 and 2 is hollow, and has at one end a small cock 6. The hollow stem or handle 5 is adapted to be charged with the liquid from its outer end, so that the ad may be charged from it from the bacl by opening the cock 6 whenever required, without touching the pad; and after charging the cock may be again closed.

The hollow handle is filled from the outer end, and is normally closed by a screwed or other stopper 7.

In treating the hair, when the pad is properly charged with the liquid, and the device is passed through the hair so that the tips of the prongs touch the scalp, the hair from the roots outward will receive and be acted upon by the liquid.

In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the trough or holder 2 is open at the bottom and at the front edge, and the comb 3 comes at the front, and is slightly inclined inward toward the handle, and holds the pad in position at the front. In this modification also, the teeth of the comb are relatively small, and may be of wire; and the comb back fits within and is held by the holder 4, in which the comb is adjustable, so that the tips of the teeth can be made to stand in any relation to the bottom surface of the pad that may be desired; that is the teeth tips may project a smaller or greater point beyond the pad surface. This will enable the tips of the comb or like device to get at the roots of the hair and the skin, no matter whether the thickness of the body of hair be large or small.

The apparatus may be applied to the treatment of or operation upon the human hair or skin, or to those of animals.

What is claimed is a 1. An apparatus for treating hair com prising a pad-holder, a hollow handle secured to the pad-holder and extending laterally therefrom, and adapted to hold liquid, said hollow handle communicating with the pad-holder, so that the liquid may flow from the handle into the pad-holder, means for controlling the flow of liquid, a clip mounted on the pad-holder, a comb mounted inthe clip and extending beyond the pad-holder and bent laterally and inclined in relation to the pad-holder, and a pad carried by the pad-holder between the pad-holder and comb, said inclined portion of the comb serving to hold the pad in the pad-holder.

2. An apparatus for treating hair, comprising a U-shaped pad-holder, a hollow handle secured to the back thereof and extending laterally from said pad-holder, the

hollow portion of the handle communicating the portion secured in the leg, and a pad carried by the U-shaped pad-holder and held therein by the laterally'bent portion of the comb.
