To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, IViLLIAM M. BRILL- :HAn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuse-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to safety fuses for electric circuits and has for its object to provide a construction, which by reason of the method of manufacture permitted and the number and character of its parts, may be made at a minimum cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction that will preclude overloading by limiting the use only of the prescribed fuse strip and precluding the use of a plurality of fuse strips, so that the well known advantages accrue.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the full description of that embodiment of the invention thatv it has been elected to illustrate.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fuse embodying the present invention, portions of the insulating casing and of the end ferrules being broken away to illustrate the arrangement and manner of holding the fuse stri FIig. 2 is a vertical section taken longitudinally and centrally of the structure and showing the convergent relation of the fuse strip clamping faces.

Referring to the drawings, the present fuse comprises an insulating body member 5 preferably cylindrical in shape as illustrated and within the end portions of which are pressed the metallic bushings 6 and 7 respectively, preferably of brass.
These bushings with their equipments are the same in structure and arrangement and the opening through each bushing includes a curved wall 8 and a flat wall 9. The curved wall 8 has a longitudinally shifting radius extending through an angular distance of s" slightly more than 180 degrees so that the Specification of Letters Patent.

The flat wall 9 of the opening through each bushing constitutes a clamping face upon which is held the corresponding end of the fuse strip 10 which in practice, is disn posed within the body 5 and bridging the interspace between the bushings, the extreme end portions of the strip being turned upwardly when the fuse holder is in the position illustrated. initially formed with the upturned ends so that when put in place within the body of the structure they will contact with the outer end faces of the thickened walls of the bushings 6 and 7 respectively and thus longitudinally position the strip so that the perforations 11 in its end portions will register with the perforations 12 that are formed in the thickened portions of the walls of the bushings and which thickened portions are between the walls 9 and the adjacent outer surfaces of the bushings.
Over each end of the insulating body member 5 is engaged a cup shaped ferrule 13 and through the end wall of each ferrule is formed a slot 14 through which is passed the terminal plate 15 for the corresponding end of the fuse. Exteriorly of the ferrule, the terminal plate is flat or may have whatever specific shape is desired for connection with the corresponding terminal of an electric circuit in which the fuse is to be ineluded.
The terminal plate, within the inclosure of the ferrule, has at one side a flat face 16 and at the opposite side a block 16 having a curved face 17, these faces being so positioned and proportioned that when the ferrule is disposed upon the insulating body 5 this inner end portion of the terminal plate will enter the opening through the corresponding bushing 6 or 7 respectively. The wall 9 of each bushing converges toward the axis of the bushing, inwardly of the bushing, while the face 16 of the inner end portion of the terminal plate is beveled to lie parallel thereto when the corresponding ferrule is in place. When the screw is turned up, its head impinges against the ferrule and it being yieldable, the corresponding clamping face of the corresponding terminal plate is drawn tightly against the corresponding end of the fuse strip to clamp and hold it firmly against the wall 9 of the corresponding bushing.
It is of course understood that these fuse strips are `manufactured with specific dimensions to carry corresponding loads and it is of course further understood that the larger the capacity, the thicker will be the strip. It will be further understood that if a strip of greater than the prescribed thickness is put into position upon the fiat walls of the openings through the bushinvs, then the tapered inner end portions or the terminal plates will wedge against further inward movement and the perforations of the plates and their ferrules will not register with the perforations of the bushings, and thus the combined clamping and retaining screws cannot be engaged. In this manner, the overloading of the fuse is prevented excepting by radical reduction in the thickness of the wedge blocks which the inner end portions of the terminal plates constitute.
What is claimed is.:
1. A fuse holder comprising an insulating body having spaced bushings in its end porn tions, each bushing having an inner fuse clamping wall in convergent relation to the axis of the bushing, a fuse clamping member removably disposed within each bushing and having a clamping face opposed to and parallel with said convergent wall of the bushing whereby to approach and recede from said Wall upon reciprocation within the bushing and correspondingly clamp or release a fuse, and means for holding the clamping members in clamping relation, said holding means for each clamping member being active in one position only of the clamping member.
2. A fuse holder comprising an insulating tubular body having a metallic bushing within each end including a clamping face at an acute angle to its axis, the body and bushing having registering perforations leading through said clamping face, a ferrule removably disposed upon each end of the body portion, a terminal carried by each fer-rule and having a portion fitted within the corresponding bushing with a` clamping face disposed to engage a fuse member upon the clamping face of the bushing, said terminal having a threaded perforation disposed to register with thc first named perforation in one position only of the terminal with respect to the bushing, and. a screw passed. through the first named perforation and cngaged in the perforations of the terminal.

4;. A fuse holder comprising a hollow body to receive a fuse strip, a clamping face at each end of the hollow body at an acute angle to the axis of the body, a clamping member for eaclrend of the body having a clamping face disposed to move toward and away from the corresponding first named clamping face when the clamping member is moved into and out of the body, and means for holding each of the clamping members in one clamping position only with respect to the corresponding clamping face that carried by the body.
