Description

OSCAR RYAN, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
DIAPHRAGM FOR TALKING-MACHINES.
Application filed February 27, 1920.
T0 all whomtmag concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR RYAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Diaphragms for Talking-M chines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to diaphragms for talking machines and the like and has particular reference to a fiber diaphragm. and the process of making the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a diaphragm for talking machines and the like which will produce a clearer, louder and fuller tone than the diaphragms used in present day constructions. 1. am aware of the fact that diaphragms have been formed of bone, and materials other than the diaphragms used on popular makes of talking machines such as the Victor, C0- lumbia and Edison but such diaphragms have not proven satisfactory in use, the tendency being to crack after a certain number of vibrations.
A further object of this invention to provide a diaphragm for talking machines which is inexpensive to manufacture and strong, and durable in operation.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following de scription.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of tl..e material which forms a diaphr m. and,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view or the r lsbed diaphragm.
In manufacturing the diaphragms which constitute my invention I first saturate several pieces of suitable paper in an exceed ingly strong solution of zinc chlorid. These sheets of paper after being saturated are removed from the solution of zinc chlorid and superimposed one upon another and then passed through several series of (70111- pressing machines which may be cotiperating rollers or the like and are gradually worked down until the excess solution of zinc chlorid has been forced out of the sheets. These rollers gradually compress the several thicknesses of paper into a thin compact mass.

found to be exceptionally hard and without the disadvantage of brittleness of the present day diaphragms. After this fiber has been glazed as above described it is cut by any suitable means into the desired size required for operation with a talking machine and the opening in the center is formed by any suitable means.
From the above description it is obvious that I have provided a diaphragm possessing properties hereinbefore not present in the diaphragms in use and it is believed that the operation of this diaphragm will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it pertains.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The process of formin talking machine diaphragms which consists of saturating a plurality of sheets of paper in a strong solution of zinc chlorid, superimposing the several sheets, one upon another, compressing the paper to expel the excess of zinc chlorid solution, drying the compressed mass, glazing the compressed mass, and cutting the mass into the desired size and shape.
2. A fiber diaphragm formed by saturating a plurality of sheets of paper in a strong solution of zinc chlorid, superimposing the several sheets, one upon another, compressing the paper to expel the excess zinc chlorid solution, drying the compressed mass, glazing the compressed means, and cutting the mass into the desired size and shape.
A resonating fiat fiber diaphragm comprising a plurality of superposed sheets of paper first treated with a solution of zinc chlorid and subsequently subjected to heat and pressure for compacting the mass.
