UNITED STATES TRUMAN R. BARNES, OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT.
HEATER.
Application filed May 7, 1919.
To all w ham it may concern Be it known that I, TRUMAN R. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to heaters, and particularly to gas heaters, having for its primary object to provide means whereby a plurality of ordinary Bunsen gas burners may be employed to efficiently heat a room.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for use in connection with one or more Bunsen gas burners which will spread the flames issuing from the burners in such manner as to distribute the heat evenly over a relatively wide area, said flame being concealed inside the body of the heater.
A still further and particular object of the invention is to provide a heater of extremely simple construction and which may be manufactured or produced at low cost, which will be of light weight and which embodies but few simple and readily assembled parts, and which is constructed and arranged in such manner as to minimize the liability of wear, breakage or derangement.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described hereinafter, illustrated in the drawing, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a heater constructed in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken longitudinally through the heater, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken upon line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularlyto the drawing 4 indicates generally the body of the heating device, the same comprising a casing formed of sheet iron or sheet steel or cast metal in the form of a hollow square with the top and bottom being open, the top 5 consisting of a grating formed of spaced longitudinal and transverse bars or of any other perforated metal or cast metal work or mesh of any description in order to allow the heat to pass through.
Specification of Letters Patent.

A. pipe 8 extends throu h or under the lower portion of the body EIOIII side to side, and this pipe is provided with upwardly extending nipples 9 to which ordinary Bunsen gas burners 10 are attached. Any number of these burners may be employed, and it will be understood that the pipe 8 is to be attached to an ordinaryilluminating gas main, direct or by means of a gas hose. The burners 10 are disposed directly beneath a heat distributing or radiating plate 11, the latter being disposed below the top 5 of the body. This plate may be formed of metal of such character as to efficiently radiate the heat without danger of buckling orreadily burning out.
My improvement may be applied to any gas heater, either with open front or open top or with all sides closed and perforated. I propose to arrange the burners 10 beneath the plate 11 in such manner that the flames projecting from the burners will strike the radiating plate and be deflected or distributed upon the under surface thereof, said flame being concealed inside the body of the heater. If the burners are arranged in this manner an even distribution of the heat is assured, and the plate will be maintained at substantially an even temperature throughout its length and breadth.
For the purpose of securing maximum strength of construction of the device as a whole and reinforcing the sheet metal body .in a simple and effective manner and with the use of a minimum number of parts, I pro vide the rating 5 with a flat outer frame strip 5 which is riveted to the upper edge of the sheet metal body and braces and reinforces the same at the top. I also provide a fiat reinforcing strip 12 extending around and riveted to the lower edge of the body, whereby the bottom portion of the body is rigidly braced and reinforced. The plate 11 is also provided with a marginal fiat depending flange 11 which is suitably secured to the body and braces and reinforces the same at an intermediate point. By this means thin sheet metal may be employed in the formation of a strong and durable body without the use of an excessive number of parts and with a material saving in the cost of manufacture.
From the foregoing it is obvious that I have provided a heater of extremely simple construction, but which will adequately perform the function for which it is designed.
In the present instance I have illustrated the plate 11 as being horizontally disposed, but it will be understood that this plate may be inclined to any degree if desired. Any number of burners may be employed in the heater body.
\Vhile the above is a description of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes may be made in the details of construction and design and proportion of parts without departing from the spirit of the in- Vention as defined by the claim.
I claim A heater comprising a body of substantially rectangular formation constructedof sheet metal and open at its top and bottom, legs supporting said body spaced above the floor, a grill supported in the top opening of the body and flush with the edges thereof and including a flat outer frame portion extending around and secured to the inner surface of the body and acting to reinforce the upper portions of the walls of same, a flat reinforcing band disposed Within the bottom opening of the body and extending around the walls of said body flush with the edges thereof, an imperforate radiating plate spaced below the grill and above said reinforcing band and wholly closing communication between the top and bottom openings, a gas pipe extending centrally through the body below said radiating plate and supported in opposite walls thereof, and burners supported in spaced relation on said pipe so as to direct and equally distribute flames against the under surfaces of said imperforate heat radiating plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
