' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. WEIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at East McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Tank Valve Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valve devices and has for its principal object to provide an improved valve device for controlling the flow of liquid fuel from the liquid fuel tank of a motor vehicle. a
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a gasolene tank for a motor vehicle with my improved valve device applied thereto; Fig. 2 an inverted plan view of the valve device,'partly in section, and Figs. 3 to 6, sectional views of the valve device showing the controlling valve in the respective positions of emergency, draining, blow out, and: shut off.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, my improved valve device is shown applied to a gasolene tank 1 and comprises a body 2 having a screw threaded nipple 3 adapted to be screwed into the bottom of the tank, 1.
Within the body 2 is a tapered plug valve 4 having a three way port 5 and provided with an operating handle 6, the operating. positions of the plug valve being determined by a movable pin 7 which is yieldingly pressed into cavities 8 in the body by a coil spring 9.
Passages 10 and 11 extend fromthe seat of the valve 1 through the nipple 3 and a small pipe 12 connected to passage 10 extends up into the tank 1 for a certain disnipple 15 having a passage 16, leading to the seat of said valve, serves both as a drain connection and as a blow out connection.
In operation, the} handle 6 is normally maintained in theservice position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, in which the port 5 in the plug valve" 4 connects passage 10 with passage 14, so that gasolene in the tank 1 is free to flow through the nipple 13 to the carbureter of the engine until the level of like, when it is desired to cut the gasolene i'nthe tank falls below the" top of thepipe 12. m

gasolene supply to the carbureter will be cut off and the operator will thus be warned that,

shown in Fig. f the drawing, all of the passages are closed and this position may be useful in case of feed pipe breakageor the off all flow of gasolene from thetank '1.
Having now described my invention, what I I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A valve device for a liquid fuel tank of a motor vehicle comprising a valvelbody having an inlet passage leading to the tank, 1 in an outlet p'assageand a blow out passage,
and a valve for connecting theinlet passage with the outlet passagein oneposition and the blow out passage with the outlet passage, in another position.
2. A valve device for attachment to a motor vehicle asolene tank comprising a valve body having an outletpassage and a drain passage and a valve in said body hav ing one position for connecting the tank with the outlet passage, another position for connecting the tank with the drain'passage for draining the tank, and a third position for connecting the drain passage with the outlet passage for blowing air under pressure through the outlet passage.

A valve device for attachment to a motor vehicle gasolene tank comprising a valve body having an outlet passage, a tank inlet passage, and a drain passage, and a valve in said body having one position for connecting the inlet passage with the outlet passage, another position for connecting the inlet passage with the drain passage, another position for connecting the drain passage with the outlet passage, and a position inwhich all said passages are closed.

A valve device for attachment to a motor vehicle gasolene tank comprising a valve body having a high tank level inlet passage, a low tanklevel inlet passage, an outlet passage and a drain passage, and a valve in said body having one position for conneetingthe high level passage with said outlet passage, another position for connecting the loW level inlet passage with the outlet passage, another position for connecting the low level inlet passage with the drain passage, and another position for connecting the drain passage with the outlet passage.
5. A valve device for attachment to a motor vehicle gasolene tank comprising a valve body having a high tank level inlet passage, a low tank level inlet passage, an outlet passage and a drain passage, and a valve in said body having one position for connecting the high level passage with said outlet passage, another position for connecting the low level inlet passage with the outlet passage, another position for connecting the low level inlet passage with the drain passage, another position for connecting the drain passage with the outlet passage, and another position in which all said passages are closed.
