T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS J. JAMES, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forms for Concrete Conduits, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in forms for constructing concrete or cement conduits, sewers and the like, and its leading object is to provide a simple form whereby work can be completed more quickly and efficiently and the form shifted from one position to another in the line of the work, without being taken apart.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a form of this character with means for withdrawing the sides of the form from snug engagement with the work; and for lowering the head of the form from the work, so as to permit of the shifting of the entire form, still assembled, within the conduit, without producing any abrasion on the work.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain new and useful combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specifications and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing the form expanded in proper working condition for molding the concrete.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the form contracted to be shifted within the conduit.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical embodiment of my invention, 5 designates the vertical side members which support the facing boards 6. Above the upper ends of the side members 5 the members 7, of the arch section are disposed, said members also forming supports for the facing boards 6. The members 7 are secured by couplings S to the upper ends of the members 5. Above the members 7 the arch members 9 are arranged, the upper ends of said members being connected to each other by means of the coupling 10.
The lower ends of the members 7 are connected to the braces 11, the lower ends of which braces are secured to the vertical brace 12, the upper end of which vertical brace is secured to the meeting ends of the arch members 9. The lower end of the vertical brace or member 12 rests on the horizontal or cross brace 13.
The vertical side members 5 are provided with inwardly extending arms 14 which are adapted to rest on the horizontal supports 15 which are disposed on the horizontal or cross brace 13. The members 7 are separated from the members 9 to receive the wedges l6, which are adapted to be driven between said members to expand the arch section of the form into snug contact with the work, or to release the same from such contact, when withdrawn.
The sides of the form are expanded and contracted by means of expansion bolts or rods 17 and 18, the opposite ends of which are connected to the vertical members 5, and each of said bolts is equipped with a right and left internally threaded coupling sleeve 19, whereby the ends of the bolts, which are composed of two sections, may be moved apart or toward each other.
In order to brace the sides when expanded to normal molding position, abutments or stops 20 are provided on the vertical members 5 and these are engaged with the upper horizontal braces 21 by means of wedges 20, also wedges 15 interposed between supports 15 and lowermost horizontal brace 21.
When placed in normal position to shape the interior face of a conduit the sides of the form are supported on the blocks 22, and the cross brace 13 is supported on the blocks 23, which are spaced from the blocks 22 by means of panel braces 24:. Stringers 25 are arranged immediately beneath the cross brace 13, and oppositely facing wedges 26 are arranged on the blocks 23 and under the stringers 25, whereby the form may be adjusted to the proper height, or lowered after the work has set.
After the work has set the cross braces 21 are removed, after the expansion bolts have been manipulated to permit of such with drawal, the wedges 16 are withdrawn, the wedges 26 also withdrawn, and the blocks 22 and 23 withdrawn, whereby the sides of the form and the arch top thereof will be moved out of engagement with the Work and ma be shifted upon the rollers 27.
y Withdrawing the bolts 28 the arch section may be separated entirely from the sides of the form and the Whole arranged in knock down condition.
Having described my invention I claim 1. A form consisting of vertical members, an arch section connected to the vertical members facing boards on the vertical members and the arch section, expansion bolts connecting the vertical members to each other, Wedges for expanding the arch section, and braces connecting the arch and vertical members to each other.
2. A form for conduits having vertical forming sections and an arch forming section, braces connecting the vertical forming sections to each other, expansion bolts connecting said vertical sections, a vertical brace connected with the arch section, diagonal braces connecting said arch section With the vertical brace, and Wedges for expanding the arch section.
