' INVENTOR.
Ja s. a. wairzkh ygmxww A TTORNEYS- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. GOODRICH, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DENTAL-FLOSS HOLDER.
Application filed July 2, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES B. Goonnion, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dental-Floss Holders, of which the following is a specifi cation.
My object is to make an improved dental floss holder, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a dental floss holder embodying the principles of my invention and as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 1 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a View in elevation at right angles to Fig. 1 as seen looking in the direo tion indicated by the arrow 2.
Fig. 2-3 is an enlarged cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. l is an enlarged cross section on the lines 4-4. of Figs. 1 and 2.
The handle 1 is formed upon one end of the bar 2, and arms 3 and 4 extend from the 0pposite end of the bar 2 from the handle substantially at right angles to each other and at angles of about relative to the axis of the bar. Fingers 5 and 6 extend from the outer ends of the arms 3 and 4, the fingers being substantially parallel with each other and parallel with the axis of the bar 2. A bore 7 is formed through the junction of the bar 2 with the arms 3 and 4. Grooves 8 and 9 extend from one end of the bore 7 along the outer faces of the arms 3 and 4 and along the outer faces of the fingers 5 and 6 and across the outer ends of the fingers 5 and 6.
A piece of dental floss or the like is out Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Serial No. 308,246.
to the desired length, say about one foot and the ends tied together by a knot 10; then the doubled thread is passed through the bore 7 from the opposite side of the grooves 8 and 9 and the loop 11 is placed in the grooves 8 and 9; and then the other end comprising the loop 12 is drawn to pull the floss tight into the grooves 8 and 9 and tight across the space between the outer ends of the fingers 5 and 6.
The operator grasps the handle 1 with one hand and passes the finger through the loop 12 to hold the string tight while using the device to clean the teeth. After the piece between the fingers 5 and G has been used substantially, the thread may be loosened and moved to bring a new piece into use, and this operation may be continued until the entire thread has been used.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
1 claim:
A dental floss holder, comprising a handle, divergent arms extending outwardly from the handle, parallel fingers extending outwardly from. the outer ends of said arms, a bore through the arms at their juncture. the axis of said bore extending at right augles to the plane of the arms, grooves extending from said bore along the tops of the arms, and the outer sides and ends of the fingers, the bore being positioned to receive a looped thread from the rear to extend upwardly in the grooves and between the fingers and adapted to be held taut by a finger of the hand holding the implement.
In testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification.
J. B. GOODR-ICH.
