To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON WV. BRODOWSKI,
a citizen of the United States, residing at and useful improvements in a lock and has for its primary object the provision of a lock which will be of such construction that the combination by which thelock will be operated must be known before the lock can be operated.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a lock of the above stated character which will not require a key but which will includeseveral parts which must be turned and manipulated in a specific manner in order to actuate the locking bolt and the locking bolt operating plate.
The invention has for a further object, the provision of a lock of the above stated character which will be of simple construction and operation and which will be of such a character that the construction and arrangement of the operative parts may be readily varied to produce a new combination without materially altering the appearance of the operating parts on the outer side of the door to which the lock is applied.
The invention has for a still further object, the provision of a lock of the above stated character which will be of such a construction that some of the operating members must be placed in a certain position and held while other parts are operated to withdraw the locking bolt from its locking position.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and cooperation of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth,
provided with an elongated longitudinal slot claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a safe to which is applied the improved form of lock with the door in closed and locked position, the heads for operating the locking bolt engaging member and the plate raising member applied.

Referring more particularly to the draw ings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,-1 indicates the door of a safe 2 to which the improved lock has been The lock includes a locking bolt 3 adapted to slide through the offset cen- 'tral portion or main portion of the bracket 4, having its opposite ends secured to the inner face of the door 1, adjacent the forward vertical edge thereof, as shown at 5. -The bolt 3 is preferably flat and of elongated form with a rearwardly extended and downwardly directed tongue 6 formed on its rear or inner end and having a substantially V-shaped recess 7 formed in its upper por tion to provide a notch and also a projection 8 with an inclined forward wall, as will be readily understood by referring to the drawings. The locking bolt 3 also has a notch 9 formed in its lower inner edge portion to provide a recess at the lower inner corner of the locking bolt 8 and also a projection 10 with inclined or beveled walls as will be readily understood and the purpose of which will presently be apparent.
The locking bolt withdrawing plate 11 is 12 inits main portion to accommodate the supporting pin 13 'for the plate 11 and 1 ings. The withdrawing plate 11 is provided with a substantially V-shaped notch 16 in its upper forward end portion and a projection 17, one inclined wall of which is formed by the notch 16 and the purpose of which notch 16 and projection 17 will presently appear. A spring supporting post 18 projects from the inner side of the door 1, preferably above the supporting pin 13. The overlapped ends of the arcuate springs 19 and 20 are secured v in the post 18, the free or opposite end of the spring 19 being secured upon the screw 21 mounted in the outstanding portion of the bracket 22 carried on the locking bolt 3 inwardly of the bracket 4. The corresponding end of the arcuate spring 20 is secured in a like manner upon the screw 23 mounted in the outturned portion of the bracket 24 carried on the withdrawing plate 11, outwardly or forwardly of the end of the slot 12 thereof, as shown in the drawings. It will be understood that springs 19 and 20 may be secured to the bolt 3 and plate 11 respectively in any other suitable and well known manner, if preferred. The spring 19 tends to force the locking bolt 3 outwardly to its locking position and the spring 20 serves to swing downwardly the forward end of the withdrawing plate 11 and thereby disengage the tongues 15 and 6 and break connections between the locking bolt 3 and'the withdrawing plate 11. This will also place the withdrawing plate 11 in operative position, aswill be clearly understood as the description proceeds. An elongated plate raising member 25 is mounted upon the inner end of a shaft 26 projecting through the door 1 and having an operating handle 27 upon its outer end. The free or operating end of the member 25 has an offset portion, thereby providing a shoul der for the lower edge of the plate 11 to rest upon when forced upwardly by the member 25, owing to rotation of the shaft 26 in either direction, the side edge of the member 25 forcing the plate 11 to swing upwardly upon the pin 13. The spring 20 also tends to hold resiliently the plate 11 in its outermost'position, thereby causing the tongue 15 of the plate 11 to be in proper position for engagement with the outer wall of the tongue 60f the locking bolt 3 so that these tongues may readily interlock, when the plate 11 is forced upwardly. The locking pawl 29 for the locking bolt 3 is mounted upon a shaft 30 projecting through the door 1 at a point below the inner endof the looking bolt 3, a head 31 being formed'upon the outer end of the shaft 30 for the purpose of rotating the shaft 30 to bring'the nose of the I pawl 29 into, engagement with the lower edge of the locking bolt 3 for engagement with the outer wall of the projection 10 while the nose of the pawl catches, in the notch 9 as the locking bolt 3 is drawn inwardly, as will be later fully described. It will be understood that thehead 31 and also the head 27 on the shaft 26 are suitably spaced from the outer face of the door 1 so that they may be readily grasped and rotated and while the heads may be ofsuitable form as shown in its preferred form in Fig. 1 with the end of the elongated heads 31 and 27 curved in opposite directions so that they may be readily turned and held in plate 11 and also engage theouter side of' the projection 17 forforcing rearwardly the plate 11 when the member 32 is rotated in the proper direction. This member 32 is mounted on a shaft 34having one end rotatably mounted in the main portion of the bearing bracket 35, which has its opposite ends offset and secured to the inner face of the door 1, above the plate 11, as shown at 36. The shaft 34; extends through the door 1 and has the head 37 formed upon its outer end and spaced from the outer face of the door 1, as clearly shown in the drawings. The head 37 preferably corresponds in form to the heads 27 and 31 and may be readily rotated by the thumb and one finger while other fingers are employed to hold the shafts 26 and 30 from rotating during operation of withdrawing the locking bolt 3.
When the locking bolt 3 is extended or in its locking position and the withdrawing plate 11 is disengaged therefrom, all of the parts should be in the position shown in Figs. '1 and 2 of the drawings.
When it is desired to withdraw the looking bolt 3 from its locking position, the
handle or head 27 should be turned to cause the member 25 to move to its upstanding position and raise the plate ll'to horizontal position with the tongue 15 thereof interlocked with the tongue 6, as clearly shown in Fig; 3 of the drawings. The handle or head 31 should then be turned to move the nose of the pawl 29 to position between the forward lower corner of the plate 11 and the projection 10 of the locking bolt 3, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. It will be evident that this movement of the plate 11 and locking bolt 3 is opposed by the springs 19 and 20. After "the member 32 has been turned for some distance, the projection 33 thereof will ride out of the notch 16, but the pawl 29 will prevent the plate 11 and said locking bolt 3 from moving forwardly after the projection 10 engages the pawl 29. This will hold the lock in a partially withdrawn or unlocked position. The head or handle 37 should again be rotated in a counterclockwise direction to engage the projection 33 of the member 32 with the outer or forward edge of the projection 17 and as the member 32 continues to rotate, the plate 11 and locking bolt 3 will be forced farther inwardly until the locking bolt 3 is completely withdrawn or moved into operative position, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The door may be either opened or closed while the parts are held in this position. A further rotation of the head or handle 37, however, in a counterclockwise direction will release the projection 33 of the member 32of the plate 11 and the springs 19 and 20, being under such a tension, will act to immediately return both the plate 11 and locking bolt -3 totheir original positions. It will also be evident that movement of the member 32 in a reverse direction or disengagement of the member 25 from the plate 11 will permit the springs 19 and 20 to act to return all of the parts to their original position. It will therefore be seen that a knowledge of the construction and operation of the parts of the lock or at least a proper manipulation of the heads or handles 27, 31 and 37 must be necessary be fore the lock can be operated. It will also be evident that the number or arrangement of the notches and projections on the locking bolt 3 and plate 11 as well as the number and position of the members to be operated by the heads or handles on the outer side of the door 1 may be varied as desired, thereby changing the combination, without departing from the principle involved.
While the preferred embodiment of the bolt on a'door, a withdrawing plate for said locking bolt, means carried'by said locking bolt and said withdrawing plate for interlocking engagement at times, said withdrawi'ng plate being rotatively and slidably mounted on a' door, a plate raising member for moving said withdrawing plate to locking engagement with said locking bolt and holding said withdrawing plate in such position, spring members for normally forcing said locking bolt and said withdrawing plate outwardly, means moving said withdrawing plateand said locking bolt inwardly against the action of said spring members, and means for automatic engagement with said locking bolt to hold the latter in 1ts 1nwardly drawn position.

A lock comprising a sliding locking bolt,'a sllding withdrawing plate for sa1d locking bolt, means for forcing said withdrawing plate into alinement with" said looking bolt, tongues carried by said withdrawing plate and said locking bolt for interlocking engagement, a spring member for resiliently forcing said locking bolt upwardly and outwardly,a second spring member for resiliently forcing said withdrawing plate outwardly and downwardly, means for causing an inward sliding movement of said withdrawing plate and said locking bolt when the latter is interlocked with said withdrawing plate, and a pawl for engagement with said locking bolt to hold the same against outward movement.
3. A look comprising a sliding locking bolt, means for mounting said sliding locking bolt on one face of a door with its working end normally projecting past the edge of the door, a withdrawing plate having an elongated slot, means mounted on the side of the door and extended through said slot of the withdrawing plate to support the latter upon the door, a spring mounting post carried by said door, springs carried by said spring mounting post and connected with the locking bolt to normally force the latter outwardly, a second spring mounted on said spring mounting post and connected with the withdrawing plate to normally force the latter outwardly and. downwardly from said locking bolt, tongues carried by the locking bolt and the withdrawing plate for interlocking engagement when said withdrawing plate is brought to alinement with the locking bolt, an operating member adapted for engagement with one end of said withdrawing plate to force the latter into alinement and interlocking engagement with the locking bolt, said operating member serving as means to force the latter and the locking bolt inwardly across said door, means for mounting the last mentioned means, and a pawl mounted on said door and adapted to be held in position to engage said locking bolt and hold the same against outward movement when drawn inwardly by the withdrawing plate.

A look comprising a bolt slidably mounted upon one side of a door and having a tongue formed on its inner end, said looking bolt having a notch and projection in its lower edge, a slotted withdrawing plate, means for mounting said withdrawing plate upon the face of the door, said withdrawing plate having a tongue formed on its forward end for interlocking engagement with the tongue of the locking bolt when said with drawing plate is caused to swing to position in alinement with said locking bolt, said withdrawing plate having a recess and a notch formed in its upper edge, means for swinging said withdrawing plate into alinement with said locking bolt, the last men tioned means projecting through the door and being operable from the opposite side thereof, means operable on said opposite side of the door for engagement with the notch and projection of the withdrawing plate when the latter is in alinement with the locking bolt to force said withdrawing plate and locking bolt inwardly, means mounted on said door and connected with said withdrawing plate and said locking bolt to normally force the same outwardly and force the withdrawing plate downwardly, and means operable from said opposite side of the door for engagement with the notch andprojection on the lower edge of the locking bolt to hold the latter in its innermost position.
