T 0 all to 710m it may concern Be it known that I, HARvnY GAGNii, a sub- 'ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at St. Jean dIberville, Province of uebec, Canada, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Switches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to' make and use the same.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in railway switches.
A primary object 01': the invention is the provision of a switch throwing apparatus which will hold the switch points in either open or closed position against any undesired displacement.
A further object provision of a device type which will operate to throw the switch points and hold them in their opposite positions, and which will also operate means for additionally locking the pointsin their said positions.
A further object of the invention is the provision of spring locking means for holding the switch points in closed position which are actuated upon the throwing of the said switch points in the usual manner.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a railway switch for the purposes above specified, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiioient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel feaformations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be herefully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application, and in which:

Referring now to the accompanying draw ings by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numerals 1. designate a pair of railway rails mounted upon the ties 2 which are extended at one end thereof, as shown at 3, to sup port the switch operating mechanism. These extensions 3 are connected by the transverse bars A and 5 for a purpose to be later explained.
The ends of the switch points are shown at 6'and are of any usual construction. The
bolted or otherwise secured thereto inwardly extending plates 7 which are rigidly connected to each other by a plate 8 in order thatboth of said points 6 will be moved in unison.
An operating bar 9 is secured to one end of the plate 8 and is connected at its opposite end to an operating arm. 10 secured rigidly to the lowerend of a rotatable standard 11 mounted in the pedestal 12 and actuatedthrough the medium of the lever 13, as shown by the full and dotted line positions in Fig.1, to move the switch points in the desired manner. The standard 11 has its upper end squared in cross-section, as shown at 14, in order to provide a means iorlocking the same against any undesired rotation.
A collar 15 is slidably mounted upon the squared portion 1 1 of the standard 11 and is provided with a lower squared extension '16 which fits in a corresponding socket 17 provided in the upper end of the pedestal 12. The lever 13 has its inner end bifurcated, as at 18, and pivoted to the brackets 19, which are in turn pivotally connected to the upper end of the collar 15, as shown at 20. The free terminals of the lever 13 are connected by a pin 21 which .is rotatably mounted on a bracket 22 secured to one side of the squared portion 1 1 of the standard 11. This provides a hinge connection between the said standard and lever.
When it is'desired to release the standard 11, the lever 13 is moved from the full line position shown in Fig. 6, to the dotted line 6 have position, which raises the squared extension 16 of the collar 15 out of the socket 17, as
is also shown by the dotted lines in thisv mally held in raised position parallel andflush with the said Vices 27.
The strap 23.is bent upwardly at 28 to engage the base flange of the rail 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, thus locking the adjacent point 6 in closed position, while the strap 24 has a block or other suitable device 29 secured to its free end to engage the opposite side of the adjacent rail, thus locking the adjacent point, as shown in the dotted plates by the spring de line position in Fig. 4-

chain 33 which passes over roller 3.4, and upwardly to the upper end of the pedestal where it is secured to an arm 34 carried by the squared portion of the standard 11 and movableupwardly therewith.
Additional chains 35 are secured in suitableadjustable detaching devices 36 carried by the bar 30 and have their opposite ends connected to the free terminals of the straps 23 and 24,. as shown at 37.
Suitable rollers 38 may be provided to guide said chains and insure their proper movement. V
Obviously, when the collar 15ois raised through the instrumentality of the lever 13, the switch points 6 then, upon movement of the lever, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the said switch pointswill be thrown to tion, as is desired. Upon the depression of the lever 13 to retain the parts in their adjusted positions, the spring devices 27 will force the straps 23 and 24 upwardly again, locking said switch points against any nu desired displacement.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a railway willfirst be released, and
open or closed posiscope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus what I claim as new and desire to protect by etters Patent is 1. Inza device of the character described, with a pair of rails and switch points, of a vertically movable and rotatable actuating device for the switch points, means connected to the actuating device for throwing the switch points upon its rotation, and means carried by the actuating device for locking and releasing said rails uponthe vertical movement thereof.
2. The combination in a device of the character described, with a pair of switch points and a pair of rails, a plate connecting the said switch points, a vertically movable and rotatable actuating device connected at one end to the plate, and means connected to this said device for locking and releasing the switch points upon vertical movement of the actuating device.
In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of rails and switch points, a plate connecting said switch points, a transversely movable actuating bar, locking means for the switchlpoints connected to said bar, an actuating device for theswitch points, a locking means for said device, and means connecting the lock- 'ng means and actuating bar for locking and releasing the switch points upon proper movement of the actuating device. 7 j 4 4. In a device of the character described, the combination with the-rails of a railway track anda pair of switch pointscooperating therewith, a plate conneeting'said switch points, a pedestal, a standard rotatable therein, an arm carried by the standard, meansconnecting said arm to the plate for. actuatingthe switch points upon the rota,- tion of the standard, a collar rotatable, with the standard, a locking engagement between the collar and the pedestal forjholding the standard against. rotation,- and means carard for releasing the same.
5. In a device of the character described,- the combination with a pair of rails and switchpoints, a connection betweenv the same, a pedestal, a standard rotatable therein, an operative connection between the standard and plate for actuating the switch points upon rotation of the standard, the upper end of said standard being squared and asquared. socket providedin the pedestal, a collar slidable upon the squared end of the standard, a squared extension formed upon the collar andengaging the socket in. the pedestal for locking the standard against rotation, a leverhinged to the standard, and means connecting the lever and collar for raising and lowering the latter and locking fully described my invention, 2

6. In a device of the character described, pair of rails and switch points, a pedestal, a standard rotatable therein and pivotally connected to the switch points for actuating the same, locking means for said rails, a vertically movable collar for locking the standard against rotation, and an operative connection between the said collar and rail locking means for locking and releasing the latter.
7. The combination in a device such as described, with a pair of switch points and rails with which said switch points cooperate, means for operating the switch points including a rotatable standard, a locking collar for the same, a connection between the standard and switch points, straps hinged adjacent the switch points and engaging the rails for locking the switch points in engagement, and an operative connection between the straps and the locking collar for the standard for actuating the straps.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of rails and 00- operating switch points, a plate connecting the switch points, straps hinged to the switch points for engagement with the rails rotation, an actuating of engagement with the for locking the switch-points against displacement, means for holding the straps in their locking positions, a rotatable standard,
a an operative connection between the standard and plates for actuating the switch points, a sliding locking collar on said standard for locking the latter against movement, and an operative connection between the collar and straps for locking the switch points in engagement with the rails. 9. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of rails and a pair of cooperating switch points, a rotatable standard, an operative connection between the standard and switch points for actuating the latter, a slidable collar upon the standard for locking the same against bar positioned beneath the rails, strapslocking the switch points in engagement with the rails, a flexible connection between each of said straps and actuating bar, and a flexible connection between the actuating bar and collar whereby upon movement of the collar to release the standard, the straps will be moved out switch points and the latter released.
